چکیده

Scalable overlay networks such as Chord, CAN, Pastry, and Tapestry have recently emerged as flexible infrastructure for building large peer-to-peer systems. In practice, such systems have two disadvantages: They provide no control over where data is stored and no guarantee that routing paths remain within an administrative domain whenever possible. SkipNet is a scalable overlay network that provides controlled data placement and guaranteed routing locality by organizing data primarily by string names. SkipNet allows for both fine-grained and coarse-grained control over data placement: Content can be placed either on a pre-determined node or distributed uniformly across the nodes of a hierarchical naming subtree. An additional useful consequence of SkipNet’s locality properties is that partition failures, in which an entire organization disconnects from the rest of the system, can result in two disjoint, but well-connected overlay net-

Efficient Recovery from Organizational Disconnects in SkipNet

SkipNet is a scalable overlay network that provides controlled data placement and routing locality guarantees by organizing data primarily by lexicographic ordering of string names. A key side-effect of the SkipNet design is that all nodes from an organization form one or a few contiguous overlay segments. When an entire organization disconnects from the rest of the system, repair of only a few...

Deterministic SkipNet

We present a deterministic scalable overlay network. In contrast, most previous overlay networks use randomness or hashing (pseudo-randomness) to achieve a uniform distribution of data and routing traffic.

Exploiting network proximity in peer-to-peer overlay networks

Generic peer-to-peer (p2p) overlay networks like CAN, Chord, Pastry and Tapestry offer a novel platform for a variety of scalable and decentralized distributed applications. These systems provide efficient and fault-tolerant routing, object location and load balancing within a self-organizing overlay network. One important aspect of these systems is how they exploit network proximity in the und...

Pastry: Scalable, distributed object location and routing for large-scale peer-to-peer systems

This paper presents the design and evaluation of Pastry, a scalable, distributed object location and routing scheme for wide-area peer-to-peer applications. Pastry performs application-level routing and object location in a potentially very large overlay network of nodes connected via the Internet. It can be used to support a wide range of peer-to-peer applications like global data storage, glo...

Pastry: Scalable, Decentralized Object Location, and Routing for Large-Scale Peer-to-Peer Systems

This paper presents the design and evaluation of Pastry, a scalable, distributed object location and routing substrate for wide-area peer-to-peer applications. Pastry performs application-level routing and object location in a potentially very large overlay network of nodes connected via the Internet. It can be used to support a variety of peer-to-peer applications, including global data storag...
