چکیده

We consider methods based on the topological degree theory to compute periodic orbits of area preserving maps. Numerical approximations to the Kronecker integral give the number of fixed points of the map provided that the integration step is small ''enough''. Since in any neighborhood of a fixed point the map gets four different combination of its algebraic signs we use points on a lattice to detect the candidate fixed points by selecting boxes whose corners show all combinations of sign. This method and the Kronecker integral can be applied to bounded continuous maps such as the beam-beam map. On the other hand they can not be applied to maps defined on the torus, such as the standard map which has discontinuity curves propagating by iteration, or unbounded maps such as the Hénon map. However, the systematic use of the bisection method initialized on the lattice, even though unable to detect all fixed points of a given order, allows us to find a sufficient number of them to provide a clear picture of the dynamics, even for maps on the torus because the discontinuity curves have measure zero. ∗ e-mail: [email protected]

On the Use of the Topological Degree Theory in Broken Orbits Analysis

Dynamical systems f in Rd are studied. Let Ω ⊂ Rd be a bounded open set. We will be interested in those periodic orbits such that at least one of its points lies inside Ω and at least one of its points lies outside Ω; the orbits with this property are called Ω-broken. Information about the structure of the set of Ω-broken orbits is suggested; results are formulated in terms of topological degre...

Application of the Characteristic Bisection Method for locating and computing periodic orbits in molecular systems

The Characteristic Bisection Method for finding the roots of non-linear algebraic and/or transcendental equations is applied to LiNC/LiCN molecular system to locate periodic orbits and to construct the continuation/bifurcation diagram of the bend mode family. The algorithm is based on the Characteristic Polyhedra which define a domain in phase space where the topological degree is not zero. The...

A Note on the Periodic Orbits and Topological Entropy of Graph Maps

This paper deals with the relationship between the periodic orbits of continuous maps on graphs and the topological entropy of the map. We show that the topological entropy of a graph map can be approximated by the entropy of its periodic orbits.

Validated Study of the Existence of Short Cycles for Chaotic Systems Using Symbolic Dynamics and Interval Tools

We show that, for a certain class of systems, the problem of establishing the existence of periodic orbits can be successfully studied by means of a symbolic dynamics approach combined with interval methods. Symbolic dynamics is used to find approximate positions of periodic points, and the existence of periodic orbits in a neighborhood of these approximations is proved using an interval operat...

Topological characterization of deterministic chaos: enforcing orientation preservation.

The determinism principle, which states that dynamical state completely determines future time evolution, is a keystone of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. Since it precludes that two state space trajectories intersect, it is a core ingredient of a topological analysis of chaos based on a knot-theoretic characterization of unstable periodic orbits embedded in a strange attractor. However, k...
