چکیده

school, coming to the profession for timeless reasons — because of a physician they admire, or because they want to serve, or because they have suffered or witnessed suffering. Perhaps some lucky ones even today have been called to medicine through the medium of a book. If they have a love of literature, reading may well help them to discover a way to understand and identify with the ambitions, sorrows, and joys of the people whose lives are put in their hands. In medicine, we often separate life events from their meaning for those who live them. In literature, the two are united. That is reason enough to keep reading. And writing.

Vasopressin and Vasopressin Receptor Antagonists

Vasopressin, a neurohypophyseal peptide hormone, is the endogenous agonist at V1a, V1b, and V2 receptors. The most important physiological function of vasopressin is the maintenance of water homeostasis through interaction with V2 receptors in the kidney. Vasopressin binds to V2 receptor and increases the number of aquaporin-2 at the apical plasma membrane of collecting duct principal cells. Th...

Vasopressin in vascular regulation and water homeostasis in the brain.

It is well known that vasopressin participates in the regulation of the cardiovascular system, water electrolyte balance and many functions of the central nervous system. Receptors for vasopressin are widely distributed throughout the brain. They are present in neurons, in astrocytes and their perivascular processes, in endothelial and smooth muscle cells of blood vessels and in choroid plexus....

Application of Western Blotting Technique for Evaluating the Expression of Vasopressin Receptors in the Heart Cells; Importance in the Cardiovascular System

Vasopressin, a posterior pituitary hormone is responsible for water reabsorption by the kidneys and maintenance of cardio-vascular homeostasis. Vasopressin receptors are characterized as VR 1 (V1a), VR2 (V2), and VR3 (V1b). VR1, which is abundant in vascular smooth muscles, causes vasoconstriction by increasing intracellular calcium via the phosphatidylinositol bisphosphonate pathway and a posi...

Water in health and disease: new aspects of disturbances in water metabolism.

Vasopressin is a critical regulator of water homeostasis. There are two major receptors for vasopressin: V1 and V2 receptors. Disturbances in water balance are commonly encountered in clinical practice and can be divided into disorders of urinary dilution and concentration. The major representatives of such disorders are diabetes insipidus and the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiur...

A novel role of vasopressin in the brain: modulation of activity-dependent water flux in the neocortex.

The brain contains an intrinsic vasopressin fiber system the function of which is unknown. It has been demonstrated recently that astrocytes express high levels of a water channel, aquaporin-4 (AQP4). Because vasopressin is known to regulate aquaporin expression and translocation in kidney collecting ducts and thereby control water reabsorption, we hypothesized that vasopressin might serve a si...
