Pyridine Adsorption on Molybdenum Oxide-Alumina Catalysts

چکیده

The adsorption of pyridine on a complete monolayer molybdenum oxide-Al203 catalyst was studied. Both Lewis and Bronsted acid sites are present on a catalyst with a Mo valence of -4.1. The orientation of adsorbed pyridine was studied by means of its interaction with surface OD groups, which leads to the formation of only 2-deuteriopyridine. The fraction of molybdenum ions active for hydrogenation reactions and that for pyridine adsorption is approximately equal to the Mo5+ content, i.e., -0.2. I t is concluded that ensembles of Mo ions of higher and lower valencies (possibly Mo5+ and Mo4+) are the sites active for the chemisorption of organic molecules and hydrogen and for hydrogenation reactions.

Investigation of the Surface Structure and Activity of Molybdenum Oxide-Containing Catalysts I. An Infrared Study of the Surface Structure of Molybdena-Alumina Catalysts

A comparison has been made of the infrared spectra of alumina with molybdenum oxide alumina in both the oxidized and reduced forms. In the case of molybdena-alumina prepared via adsorption of gaseous MoOp(OH)t, the spectra show that a practically complete monolayer of Mo6+ oxide covers the alumina. After reduction with hydrogen the hydroxyls of the carrier appear. From the reversibility of redu...

Quantitative determination of the number of active surface sites and the turnover frequencies for methanol oxidation over metal oxide catalysts I. Fundamentals of the methanol chemisorption technique and application to monolayer supported molybdenum oxide catalysts

A detailed study of the methanol chemisorption and oxidation processes on oxide surfaces allowed the development of a method to quantify the number of surface active sites (Ns) of metal oxide catalysts. In situ infrared analysis during methanol adsorption showed that molecular methanol and surface methoxy species are co-adsorbed on an oxide surface at room temperature, but only surface methoxy ...

An investigation of the chemistry of molybdenum hexacarbonyl on thin dehydroxylated alumina films in ultrahigh vacuum

The adsorption of molybdenum hexacarbonyl on thin dehydroxylated alumina films grown on an Mo(100) single-crystal substrate is studied in ultrahigh vacuum using primarily temperature-programmed desorption and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. Subcarbonyls are detected using infrared spectroscopy at low temperatures and desorb at 245K. A portion of the subcarbonyls decomposes to form ...

Catalytic behavior at the nanoscale: CO adsorption on Al2O3-supported Pt clusters

The study of the adsorption and growth of metals on ceramics is a rapidly growing area, as these interactions are key to understanding many materials and processes used in modern technology. In particular, oxide-supported catalysts have been extensively studied, due to their widespread industrial applications. Knowledge of the role played by the underlying metal oxide in the reactivity of the m...

'H MAS NMR Studies of Alumina-Supported Metal Oxide Catalysts

The interactions of two-dimensional vanadium oxide and molybdenum oxide overlayers with the surface hydroxyls of an alumina support were examined with 'H MAS NMR spectroscopy. The measurements demonstrated that these surface metal oxide overlayers are homogeneously distributed over the alumina surface and essentially titrate all the accessible surface hydroxyls at monolayer coverage. The invest...
