Flood Frequency Quantification for Ungauged Sites using Continuous Simulation: a UK approach
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper outlines recent and ongoing research addressing the quantification of river flood frequencies at ungauged sites across Britain. The approach is one of modelling continuous time series of catchment runoff. Model parameters are established where data permit: the spatial generalisation to ungauged sites is effected by relating model parameters to widely available catchment properties which then provide the route to model use in data-sparse areas. The particular aspects of research described are (i) the merging of data of different time discretisation, (ii) considerations in the calibration of parameter-sparse rainfall-runoff models, (iii) considerations of site similarities in spatial generalisation and (iv) quantification of uncertainties arising from parameter estimation.

Confidence intervals for a spatially generalized, continuous simulation flood frequency model for Great Britain
[1] There is growing interest in the application of ‘‘continuous simulation’’ conceptual rainfall-runoff models for flood frequency estimation as an adjunct to event-based or statistical design methodology. The approach has advantages that stem from the use of models with continuous water balance accounting. Conceptual rainfall-runoff models usually require calibration, which in turn requires g...

متن کاملSatellite Remote Sensing and Hydrological Modeling for Flood Inundation Mapping in Lake Victoria Basin: Implications for Hydrologic Prediction in Ungauged Basins
Floods are among the most catastrophic natural disasters around the globe impacting human lives and infrastructure. Implementation of a flood prediction system can potentially help mitigate flood-induced hazards. Such a system typically requires implementation and calibration of a hydrologic model using in situ observations (i.e., rain gauges and stream gauges). Recently, satellite remote sensi...
متن کاملEstimating the flood frequency distribution
The goal of this study is to develop an objective methodology for estimating design floods, i.e. the flood peak discharge with return period T , at ungauged river catchments in Iceland. First, a regional flood frequency analysis is presented for estimating the T -year flood peak discharge with fixed duration D, Q(T,D), for poorly gauged and ungauged catchments. This is done by scaling a regiona...
متن کاملTopological and canonical kriging for design flood prediction in ungauged catchments: an improvement over a traditional regional regression approach?
In the United States, estimation of flood frequency quantiles at ungauged locations has been largely based on regional regression techniques that relate measurable catchment descriptors to flood quantiles. More recently, spatial interpolation techniques of point data have been shown to be effective for predicting streamflow statistics (i.e., flood flows and low-flow indices) in ungauged catchme...
