Theory of Josephson Phenomena in Superfluid 3He

چکیده

Quite detailed theoretical description of superfluid 3He is possible on length scales that are much larger than the atomic scale. We discuss weak links between two bulk states of 3He-B. The current through the weak link is determined by the bound states at the link. The bound state energies are spin split depending on the order parameters in the bulk. As a result, unusual current–phase relations with π state appear. For not too weak links, the order parameter in the bulk is modified because of the Josephson coupling. This leads to a stronger π state and to an additional current at constant pressure bias. The theoretical results are compared with experiments.

Observation of the superfluid shapiro effect in a 3He weak link.

We have studied the mass currents through a superfluid 3He Josephson weak link in the presence of an externally applied ac pressure modulation. Characteristic changes in the dc mass currents are observed whenever the superfluid Josephson frequency omega(J) is an integer multiple of the ac modulation frequency omega. The measured dependencies of these current changes on ac pressure amplitude are...

Direct measurement of the current-phase relation of a superfluid 3He-B weak link

Direct measurements of the current-phase relation, I versus Deltaphi, for a weak link coupling two reservoirs of B-phase superfluid helium-3 (3He-B) were made over a wide range of temperatures. The weak link consists of a square array of 100-nanometer-diameter apertures. For temperatures T such that T/Tc >/= 0.6 (where Tc is the superfluid transition temperature), I approximately sin(Deltaphi)....

Bi-state Superfluid 3He Weak Links and the Stability of Josephson p States

We have discovered new features of the current-phase relation, I f , in superfluid 3He weak links. Firstly, we find that at any given temperature there are two distinct I f functions that characterize the weak link. Secondly, both functions continuously develop an unusual form that ultimately leads to the previously reported p state. The observed form of I f has recently been predicted for unco...

VISCOSITY COEFFICIENTS OF THE A-PHASE OF SUPERFLUID He AT LOW TEMPERATURES

It has been shown that the Boltzmann equation for the viscosity of the A-phase of superfluid 3He at low temperatures has the same form as for a normal Ferrni liquid. The viscosity coefficients A, B, C, D and E are derived exactly. The h , parameter plays an important role in determining the temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficients

Broken Symmetry and Nonequilibrium Superfluid 3He Circular Birefringence of Propagating Transverse Currents

The superfluid phases of 3He provide a unique physical system to study the dynamical effects of spontaneous symmetry breaking in condensed matter. The theory of superfluid 3He is grounded in what are arguably two of the most successful theories of strongly interacting matter, Landau’s Fermi-liquid theory and the BCS pairing theory of superconductivity. These two theories were placed into a comm...
