چکیده

Imagine a network technology that routinely loses information, experiences variable and unpredictable delay in data delivery, and makes no distinction between applications with different communication requirements. Next, imagine that the use of this technology is growing exponentially and that, even as networks become increasingly congested, its applications are being extended to global-scale voice and video. This scenario describes the situation we face in supporting real-time applications over an IP-based infrastructure. Such applications involve data flows that have quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. A QoS-sensitive data flow cannot readily tolerate the effects of packet loss, delay (and delay variation, or jitter), and fluctuations in network throughput. In this article, we examine the problems in attempting to make the existing IP infrastructure do what it was never designed to do—provide QoS support for integrated services to both real-time and non-real-time applications. We concentrate on the issues and principles concerning router modification for IP packet handling.

A Proposal for Service Differentiation by a Link Layer Protocol Based on SR ARQ and Its Evaluation

This paper studies the situation where multiple IP flows are aggregated over a single wireless channel and an error recovery by retransmissions is performed by Selective-Repeat (SR) ARQ. We propose MQ-PFRS (Multi-QoS Per-Flow Resequencing) ARQ that provides a differentiated service for an IP flow depending on its QoS class, such as real-time or non-real-time. MQ-PFRS ARQ eliminates interference...

MRED: An Algorithm to Insure High QoS in IP Networks

Abstract—Today’s computer networks support only best-effort service, yet future packet networks will have to support realtime communication services that allow clients to transport information with performance guarantees expressed in terms of delay, delay jitter throughput, and loss rate. Random Early Detection (RED) algorithm is one of the scheduling mechanisms used in IP network. RED is an a...

Differentiated Services: Experiment Report

1 Problem statement The experiments described in this report address the problem of Quality of Service (QoS) support in IP networks. Experiments focus on the Differentiated Services (diffserv) QoS architecture specified in RFC 2475. The Diffserv architecture is based on the idea of classifying IP flows into aggregates and differentiating the service given to the aggregates rather than to flows ...

Negotiation and Authentication of QoS Flows

Abstract The main objective of the IETF Differentiated Services (DiffServ) model is to allow for the support of different levels of service to different flows of information aggregated in Classes of Service (CoS), on a TCP/IP infrastructure. This differentiated treatment will motivate some users to get better Quality de Service (QoS) for their flows however without assuming the associated costs...

Deployment of VoIP Technology: QoS Concerns

Voice over IP (VoIP) is an emerging communication service allowing voice transmission over a private or a public IP network. VoIP allows significant benefits for customers and service providers including cost savings, phone and service portability, mobility, and the integration with other applications. Nevertheless, the deployment of the VoIP technology encounters many challenges such as intero...
