Molasses as an energy source for cattle.
نویسنده
چکیده
Molasses has been used as a major energy component of feedlot diets for about 15 years (Preston et al. 1967). Over the last 5 years of drought conditions molasses has been extensively fed to cattle in large areas of north-east Australia applying the principles for its use advocated by Preston and his colleagues (see Preston & Willis 1974). A prerequisite of drought feeding is for low labour costs and an ability to move from maintenance to feeding for production as market conditions improve. Molasses is deficient in nitrogen for efficient rumen fermentation and the level of NPN supplementation may be used to restrict feed intake, whilst strategic protein supplementation may be used to increase productivity. A study is reported which investigates the use of these supplements to control intake and level of production.

Molasses as an Energy Source for Sheep
Diets based on molasses as the principle source of energy for cattle are well established (Preston and Willis 1974). However, the use of molasses as an energy source for sheep, particularly under drought conditions, has not been studied extensively. The main purpose of the studies reported here was to measure the intake and production of sheep given diets containing a high proportion of molasse...
متن کاملUse of Response Surface Methodology Analysis for Xanthan Biopolymer Production by Xanthomonas campestris: Focus on Agitation Rate, Carbon Source, and Temperature
The current study is an attempt to contribute for efficient and cost-effective substrates for xanthan gum production. In this context, the sugar cane molasses wastes can be used as a cheap substrate for xanthan gum production. Xanthan biopolymer production by a novel Xanthomonas campestris strain IBRC-M 10644 was optimized with statistical approaches. Based on the results ...
متن کاملPerformance of Weaner Cattle given Molasses and Supplements under Feedlot and Grazing Conditions
A series of feeding experiments were undertaken with weaner cattle to assess the effects on liveweight performance of supplementing a basal diet of molasses, urea and roughage with various protein and energy supplements. The supplements included extruded soyabeans, a mixture of extruded soyabean and crushed maize grain, or soyabean and crushed maize extruded together. These experiments indicate...
متن کاملUV/H2O2/TiO2/Zeolite Hybrid System for Treatment of Molasses Wastewater
Wastewater from molasses processing contains a large amount of coloured substances that give a recalcitrant dark brown colour and high organic load to the effluent. Photocatalytic decolourization of molasses wastewater was performed using titanium dioxide catalyst coated on the surface of South African natural zeolite using the solid-solid dispersion method. Addition of hydrogen peroxide as...
متن کاملThe effects of defaunation of the rumen on the growth of cattle on low-protein high-energy diets.
1. The effects of defaunation of the rumen of cattle on low-protein diets was studied using animals given free access to a basal diet of liquid molasses and 1500 g oaten straw/head per d. These diets induced moderate numbers of protozoa in the rumen. 2. Nonyl phenol ethoxylate (trade name teric GN9) was used for defaunation; 100 g teric GN9 was found to be sufficient to eliminate protozoa from ...
