Adaptive eigenvalue computation: complexity estimates

چکیده
This paper is concerned with the design and analysis of a fully adaptive eigenvalue solver for linear symmetric operators. After transforming the original problem into an equivalent one formulated on `2, the space of square summable sequences, the problem becomes sufficiently well conditioned so that a gradient type iteration can be shown to reduce the error by some fixed factor per step. It then remains to realize these (ideal) iterations within suitable dynamically updated error tolerances. It is shown under which circumstances the adaptive scheme exhibits in some sense asymptotically optimal complexity.

Adaptive computation of smallest eigenvalues of self-adjoint elliptic partial differential equations
We consider a new adaptive finite element (AFEM) algorithm for self-adjoint elliptic PDE eigenvalue problems. In contrast to other approaches we incorporate the inexact solutions of the resulting finite dimensional algebraic eigenvalue problems into the adaptation process. In this way we can balance the costs of the adaptive refinement of the mesh with the costs for the iterative eigenvalue met...
متن کاملAdaptive Chebyshev Iterative Methods for Nonsymmetric Linear Systems Based on Modified Moments bY
Large, sparse nonsymmetric systems of linear equations with a matrix whose eigenvalues lie in the right half plane may be solved by an iterative method based on Chebyshev polynomials for an interval in the complex plane. Knowledge of the convex hull of the spectrum of the matrix is required in order to choose parameters upon which the iteration depends. Adaptive Chebyshev algorithms, in which t...

متن کاملRobust Estimates for hp-Adaptive Approximations of Non-Self-Adjoint Eigenvalue Problems
We present new residual estimates based on Kato’s square root theorem for spectral approximations of non-self-adjoint differential operators of convection–diffusion–reaction type. These estimates are incorporated as part of an hp-adaptive finite element algorithm for practical spectral computations, where it is shown that the resulting a posteriori error estimates are reliable. Provided experim...
متن کاملThe Parallelization of an Adaptive Multigrid Eigenvalue Solver with LPARX
We have developed a parallel adaptive eigenvalue solver and applied it to a model problem in theoretical materials science. Our method combines adaptive mesh reenement techniques with a novel multigrid eigenvalue algorithm. By exploiting adaptivity, we have reduced computation time and memory consumption by more than two orders of magnitude. We have implemented our solver using the LPARX parall...
