چکیده

In 14 studies, each lasting seven days, on eight bottle fed infants milk intake was measured by deuterium dilution and by weighing the formula consumed and oral losses. Mean (SD) milk intake was 829 (108) g/day when measured by isotope dilution and 837 (98) g/day when measured by direct weighing, giving a mean difference between methods of 1.0 (5.0)%. Thus the stable isotope procedure is a potentially useful method for investigating lactation and nutritional problems.

Relation of growth hormone response to growth hormone-releasing hormone to estimation of milk production via deuterium oxide dilution in beef cattle.

Current methods of estimating milk production in beef cows can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and subject to high variability. The weigh-suckle-weigh (WSW) method requires repeated separation of offspring from their dams. Machine milking requires that animals be acclimated to the equipment prior to the estimation. The objective of Exp. 1 was to validate a deuterium oxide (D2O) dilution met...

Breast-milk intake of 9-10-mo-old rural infants given a ready-to-use complementary food in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND Lipid-based ready-to-use foods are currently used for infant feeding, but their potential effect on breast-milk intake is not well documented. OBJECTIVE The objective was to assess the breast-milk intake of 9-10-mo-old infants given either a ready-to-use complementary food (RUCF) paste or a standard corn-soy blend (UNIMIX) porridge in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. DES...

A modification to the isotope-dilution technique for estimating milk intake of pigs using pig serum.

The aim of this study was to compare the measurement of deuterium oxide (D2O) directly in pig serum with that in sublimed whole blood. This was to assess whether excluding vacuum sublimation before analysis would cause any significant loss of accuracy in estimates of pig milk intake. Water and serum standards were made in deionized water and serum, respectively, and were assayed with samples un...

Milk intake and carbon dioxide production of piglets determined with the doubly labelled water technique.

The present study was undertaken to study different methodological aspects of quantifying CO2 production and milk intake of suckling piglets using the doubly labelled water (DLW) technique. In total, 37 piglets were enriched intraperitoneally with DLW to study equilibration time of 18O (n = 3), to validate the estimation of milk intake and CO2 production (n = 10) of piglets fed milk replacer an...

Lactation in tiie Dog: Mill< Composition and Intal^e by Puppies

The composition and intake of milk by mother-reared puppies was studied to compare protein and energy intakes of puppies with estimated requirements. Milk samples were obtained from five beagle bitches over the period of 7-37 days postpartum. Dog milk contained on average 22.7% dry matter, 9.47% fat, 7.53% protein, 3.81% sugar and 146 kcal gross energy per 100 g. Protein comprised 31% of milk e...
