چکیده

A long pulse plasma discharge experiment was carried out using RF heating power in the Large Helical Device (LHD), a currentless magnetic confining system. Progress in long pulse operation is summarized since the 10 experimental campaign (2006). A scaling relation of the plasma duration time to the applied RF power has been derived from the experimental data so far collected. It indicates that there exists a critical divertor temperature and consequently a critical RF heating power PRFcrit=0.65MW. The area on the graph of the duration time versus the RF heating power was extended over the scaling relation by replacing divertor plates with new ones with better heat conductivity. The cause of the plasma collapse at the end of the long pulse operation was found to be the penetration of metal impurities. Many thin flakes consisting of heavy metals and graphite in stratified layers were found on the divertor plates and it was thought that they were the cause of impurity metals penetrating into the plasma. In a simulation involving injecting a graphite-coated Fe pellet to the plasma it was found that 230μm in the diameter of the Fe pellet sphere was the critical size which led the plasma to collapse. A mode-conversion heating method was examined in place of the minority ICRF heating which has been employed in almost all the long-pulse plasma discharges. It was found that this method was much better from the viewpoint of achieving uniformity of the plasma heat load to the divertors. It is expected that PRFcrit will be increased by using the mode-conversion heating method.

Electron Heating by ICRF Mode-Conversion Heating in LHD

Electron heating regime using with radio-frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) has been investigated in helical magnetic configuration. Mode-conversion scenario was applied to the LHD plasmas. When the wave frequency is change to be lower than that in the standard ICRF heating (minority ion heating) condition, the resonance layers are moved away to the peripheral regi...

Confinement and divertor studies in Alcator C - Mod

Early results from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak indicate that ohmic energy confinement does not obey the Neo-Alcator scaling. Instead 'Ohmic L-mode' confinement, close to ITER89-P, is obtained, which substantially exceeds Neo-Alcator under some circumstances. ICRF-heated plasmas follow the same scaling. H-modes are observed both in ohmic and ICRF heated plasmas, with confinement enhancements of ab...

Study of the Radio-frequency Driven Sheath in the Ion Cyclotron Slow Wave Antennas

The electrostatic Faraday screen(FS) is generally used to suppress the strong electrostatic interaction between the ICRF antenna and edge plasmas near the antenna. It is recognized that FS suppresses the electrostatic field parallel to the magnetic field(E//), and particle and heat fluxes into the antenna current strap effectively. Even with FS, however, impurity generation from FS is a severe ...

PFC / JA - 96 - 39 ICRF Heating Scenarios on Alcator C - Mod

Successful high power ICRF heating of L-mode and H-mode plasmas has been performed in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak with up to 3.5 MW of RF power at 80 MHz. Efficient absorption (90-100%) of the RF power was observed for D(H) heating at 5.3 T (here the minority ion species is indicated parenthetically). Lower single-pass absorption experiments were also performed in D(3He) at 7.9 T, D( 2 13He) at 4...
