CHAPTER 4 Urbanization , Agglomeration , and Economic Development

چکیده
In 2007 the United Nations Population Fund released a report forecasting rapidly rising levels of urbanization over the next two decades, especially in the developing world. It noted that for the fi rst time in history, more than half the world’s population resides in urban areas. The same year UNHABITAT issued a report highlighting the slums and deplorable living conditions in cities in developing countries. That report (UN-HABITAT 2007) estimated that by the end of 2007 there would be more than 1 billion slum dwellers, most of them living in developing countries. It claims that in many cases the economic circumstances of urban migrants are worse than those of rural peasants. In 2003 the United Nations surveyed member governments eliciting their attitudes toward urbanization. It found that the “vast majority” of these governments would have liked to shift populations back to rural areas and to stem the tide of urbanization. Is urbanization actually bad for development? If life in urban areas were worse for urban dwellers than the life they left behind, presumably they would leave the city. So why all the fuss about urbanization and development?

Urbanization and Economic Development
This paper provides a survey and guide to the literature relevant to urbanization and economic development. The paper starts with some basic facts and trends about urbanization worldwide. It then reviews the traditional twosector urban-rural model, but focuses on the modern version, Krugman’s coreperiphery model. However, two sector models do not capture the notion of an economy composed of man...
متن کاملAgglomeration, Inequality and Economic Growth: Cross-section and panel data analysis
The effects of inequality on economic growth depend on several factors. On one hand, they depend on the time horizon considered, on the initial level of income and on its initial distribution. But, on the other hand, as growth and inequality are also uneven across space, it also seems relevant to wonder about the effects of the geographic agglomeration of economic activity. Moreover, it seems r...
متن کاملSpatial dependence of the level of urbanization and its economic mechanism- A spatial analysis in demography
Through exploratory spatial analysis, this paper found strong spatial dependence in levels of urbanization among 287 prefecture-level cities in China, and the high-high and low-low were the dominant spatial agglomeration types among the neighbor cities. The major socio-economic factors also showed obvious spatial dependence, which might contribute to the spatial agglomeration of the urbanizatio...
متن کاملThe Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity
This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...
متن کاملThe Effect of Urban Heat Island on Climate Warming in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration in China.
The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) has experienced rapid urbanization and dramatic economic development since 1978 and the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRDUA) has been one of the three largest urban agglomerations in China. We present evidence of a significant urban heat island (UHI) effect on climate warming based on an analysis of the impacts of the urbanization rate, urban population,...
