The Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Observation of an X - ray Ionization Cone in Markarian 3

چکیده
We present a preliminary analysis of the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mkn 3, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The high-energy spectrum (λ . 4 Å) is dominated by reflection of the AGN continuum radiation in a cold optically thick medium and contains bright Kα fluorescent lines from iron and silicon, as well as weak, blended lines from sulfur and magnesium. The soft X-ray emission (4 . λ . 23 Å) is spatially extended along the O [III] ionization cone and shows discrete signatures of emission following recombination and photoexcitation produced in a warm photoionized region. The measured iron L line fluxes indicate that emission from collisionally ionized plasma is almost completely negligible, and does not contribute significantly to the total energy budget of the X-ray emission. We find that significant fractions of the Hand He-like resonance lines, as well as the observed iron L lines are produced through re-emission from the warm absorbing medium observed in Seyfert 1 galaxies. Its X-ray spectral properties are qualitatively consistent with those of a typical Seyfert 1 galaxy viewed at a different orientation, and provide further convincing evidence for the existence of an obscured Seyfert 1 nucleus in Mkn 3. A Pile-up Model for Dispersed Spectra
The observation of a bright X-ray source by the Chandra X-ray Observatory's High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) can be compromised by photon pile-up in the CCD leading to false absorption features in the observed spectrum. A method for removing the e ects of pile-up in a dispersed grating spectrum is presented. The e ectiveness of the technique is demonstrated through its appl...
متن کاملThe CHANDRA HETGS X-ray Grating Spectrum of η Carinae
η Carinae may be the most massive and luminous star in the Galaxy and is suspected to be a massive, colliding wind binary system. The CHANDRA X-ray observatory has obtained a calibrated, high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the star uncontaminated by the nearby extended soft X-ray emisssion. Our 89 ksec CHANDRA observation with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) shows that t...

We present high-resolution soft-X-ray spectra of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, taken with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). Its rich emission-line spectrum is dominated by recombination in a warm plasma (bright, narrow radiative recombination continua provide the " smoking gun "), which is ph...

We present the first spatially separated X-ray observation of the active UV Ceti binary with Chandra, providing important new information on the relative X-ray activity levels of its nearly identical dM5.5e components. The two components had similar X-ray luminosities during low-level periods and emission measure loci derived from Low Energy Transmission Grating spectra reveal similar coronal t...
متن کاملHigh Resolution X - Ray Spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 Galaxies
X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 galaxies provides an excellent probe of the circumnuclear environment in active galactic nuclei. The grating experiments on both Chandra and XMM-Newton have now provided the first high resolution spectra of several of the brightest Seyfert 2's. We present Chandra HETG data on Markarian 3, and XMM-Newton RGS data on NGC 1068. In both cases, the spectra are dominat...
