چکیده

The paper presentsan ultrasonic guided wave methodology for inspection of a fillet joint with a bend.Owing to the complex shape of the geometry, it is not amenable for conventional techniques. The methodology developed utilizes through-transmission ultrasonic testing. Two 90Δ angle beam (surface wave) ultrasonic transducers of central frequency 2.25 MHz, acting as a transmitter and a receiver are used. A 2.0 mm thick fillet weld joint of SS 304 with rectangular notches,in the weld, of various depths viz. 20% -50% wall thickness (WT) in the range of 0.4 mm – 0.8 mm with 10.0 mm length are considered. The amplitude drop for the notches is compared with that of defect-free locations to evaluate the sensitivity of the technique. The sensitivity of the technique is established to be 0.4 mm deep (20%WT).

A Novel Method for Ultrasonic Evaluation of Horizontal Defects Using Time-of-Flight Diffraction

Time-of-flight diffraction method (ToFD) is an amplitude-independent sizing method which is based on the measurement of time-of-flight of defect tip diffracted waves. Although ToFD can measure through-wall length of defect accurately, this method is not capable of measuring horizontal defect size. In this paper, a new ToFD method for evaluating horizontal planar defects is presented. The finite...

Guided Wave Propagation in Bend Pipes using Split Domain FEM Approach

Ultrasonic Guided Wave inspection of pipes has been extensively used in various industries such as oil, gas and petrochemical industries. The behavior of guided waves in straight pipes is well known but the presence of features like pipe bends, welds may distort the receiving signals. It is therefore a challenging task to study the behavior of guided waves through these features. However, the 3...

Automated Visual Inspection Algorithm for Solder Joint of Surface Mount Devices Based on Three Dimensional Shape Analysis

An automated visual inspection system has been developed for use with surface mount devices (SMDs) on a printed circuit board (PCB). The system is capable of inspecting minute solder joints of fine pitch components as small as 0.3mm pitch QFP leads. A solder joint is judged using a height image and an intensity image that are detected by a unique confocal height sensor. A solder joint is classi...
