Photometric Identification of Young Stripped-Core Supernovae

چکیده
We present a method designed to identify the spectral type of young (less than ∼ 30 days after explosion) and nearby (z < ∼ 0.05) supernovae (SNe) using their broad-band colors. In particular, we show that stripped-core SNe (i.e., hydrogen deficient core-collapse events, spectroscopically defined as SNe Ib and SNe Ic, including broad-lined SN 1998bw-like events) can be clearly distinguished from other types of SNe. Using the full census of nearby SNe discovered during the year 2002, we estimate the impact that prompt multi-band photometry, obtained by 1 m class telescopes, would have on the early identification of stripped-core events. Combining this new approach with ongoing spectroscopic follow-up programs, one can expect ∼ 20 nearby, stripped-core events to be identified, each year, around, or before, maximum light. Follow-up studies, including prompt, multiepoch optical spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry, as well as radio and X-ray observations, could greatly increase our understanding of these events, and shed new light on their association with cosmological gamma-ray bursts. Transparent Helium in Stripped Envelope Supernovae
The light curves and velocity evolution of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) provide important clues to help constrain their progenitors. This may be especially important for stripped envelope SNe (Type Ib, Ic, and IIb), which have been elusive in providing direct connections with the massive stars that give rise to these explosions. Using simple arguments based on photometric light curves, we pro...
متن کاملOptical Spectra of Supernovae
The temporal evolution of the optical spectra of various types of supernovae (SNe) is illustrated, in part to aid observers classifying supernova candidates. Type II SNe are defined by the presence of hydrogen, and they exhibit a very wide variety of photometric and spectroscopic properties. Among hydrogen-deficient SNe (Type I), three subclasses are now known: those whose early-time spectra sh...
متن کاملDetecting the progenitors of core collapse supernovae
The masses and the evolutionary states of the progenitors of corecollapse supernovae are not well constrained by direct observations. Stellar evolution theory generally predicts that massive stars with initial masses less than about 30M⊙ should undergo core-collapse when they are cool M-type supergiants. However the only two detections of a SN progenitor before explosion are SN1987A and SN1993J...
متن کاملPredicting the Presence of Companions for Stripped-envelope Supernovae: The Case of the Broad-lined Type Ic SN 2002ap
Many young, massive stars are found in close binaries. Using population synthesis simulationswe predict the likelihood of a companion star being present when these massive stars end their lives as core-collapse supernovae (SNe). We focus on stripped-envelope SNe, whose progenitors have lost their outer hydrogen and possibly helium layers before explosion. We use these results to interpret new ...
متن کاملBayesian Single-Epoch Photometric Classification of Supernovae
Ongoing supernova (SN) surveys find hundreds of candidates, that require confirmation for their use as standard candles, to measure the cosmic supernova and star formation rates, to constrain progenitor models, and to track the contribution of supernovae (SNe) to metal enrichment. Traditional classification based on followup spectroscopy of all candidates is virtually impossible for these large...
