Spatial coherence resonance in neuronal media with discrete local dynamics

چکیده
We study effects of spatiotemporal additive noise on the spatial dynamics of excitable neuronal media that is locally modelled by a two-dimensional map. We focus on the ability of noise to enhance a particular spatial frequency of the media in a resonant manner. We show that there exists an optimal noise intensity for which the inherent spatial periodicity of the media is resonantly pronounced, thus marking the existence of spatial coherence resonance in the studied system. Additionally, results are discussed in view of their possible biological importance. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spatial coherence resonance in excitable media.
We study the phenomenon of spatial coherence resonance in a two-dimensional model of excitable media with FitzHugh-Nagumo local dynamics. In particular, we show that there exists an optimal level of additive noise for which an inherent spatial scale of the excitable media is best pronounced. We argue that the observed phenomenon occurs due to the existence of a noise robust excursion time that ...
متن کاملPersistency of noise-induced spatial periodicity in excitable media
– We study effects of spatiotemporal additive noise in conjunction with subthreshold travelling waves on the spatial dynamics of excitable media. We show that solely additive noise is able to extract an inherent spatial periodicity of the media in a resonant manner, thus marking the existence of spatial coherence resonance in the studied system. Next, in addition to noise, we introduce to the m...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal dynamics on small-world neuronal networks: The roles of two types of time-delayed coupling
We investigate temporal coherence and spatial synchronization on small-world networks consisting of noisy Terman-Wang (TW) excitable neurons in dependence on two types of time-delayed coupling: {xj(t− τ)− xi(t)} and {xj(t− τ)− xi(t− τ)}. For the former case, we show that time delay in the coupling can dramatically enhance temporal coherence and spatial synchrony of the noise-induced spike train...
متن کاملPeriodic calcium waves in coupled cells induced by internal noise
We show that internal stochasticity, originating from finite cell sizes and related small numbers of reactant ions participating in the dynamics, is able to extract a characteristic spatial frequency of calcium waves in the medium of diffusively coupled cells. Internal noise is thereby the only agent acting on the system. As the spatial periodicity is best pronounced at an intermediate level of...
متن کاملCoherence resonance due to correlated noise in neuronal models
We study the regularity of noise-induced excitations in the FitzHugh–Nagumo (FHN) neuronal model subject to excitatory and inhibitory high-frequency input with and without correlations. For each value of the correlation a relative maximum of spike coherence can be observed for intermediate noise strengths (coherence resonance). Moreover, the FHN system exhibits an absolute maximum of coherent s...
