Climate Over the Past Two Millennia

چکیده

To assess the significance of modern climate change, it is essential to place recent observed changes in a longer-term context. This review assesses the evidence from both “proxy” climate data and theoretical climate model simulations with regard to the nature and causes of climate variability over a time interval spanning roughly the past two millennia. Evidence is reviewed for changes in temperature, drought, and atmospheric circulation over this timescale. Methods for reconstructing past climate from proxy data are reviewed and comparisons with the results of climate modeling studies are provided. The assessment provided affirms the role of natural (solar and volcanic) radiative forcing in past changes in large-scale mean temperature changes and in dynamical modes of climate variability such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influencing large-scale climate. At hemispheric scales, late twentieth century warmth appears unprecedented in the context of at least the past 2000 years. This anomalous warmth can only be explained by modern anthropogenic forcing. 111 A nn u. R ev . E ar th P la ne t. Sc i. 20 07 .3 5: 11 113 6. Northeast Siberian ice wedges confirm Arctic winter warming over the past two millennia

15 Arctic climate has experienced major changes over the past millennia that are not fully 16 understood in terms of their controls and seasonality. Stable-data from ice wedges in 17 permafrost provide unique information on past winter climate. Recently, an ice-wedge 18 record from the Lena River Delta suggested for the first time that Siberian winter 19 temperatures increased throughout the Ho...

Climate over past Millennia

[1] We review evidence for climate change over the past several millennia from instrumental and high-resolution climate ‘‘proxy’’ data sources and climate modeling studies. We focus on changes over the past 1 to 2 millennia. We assess reconstructions and modeling studies analyzing a number of different climate fields, including atmospheric circulation diagnostics, precipitation, and drought. We...

Anthropogenic Albedo Changes and the Earth's Climate.

The human species has been altering the environment over large geographic areas since the domestication of fire, plants, and animals. The progression from hunter to farmer to technologist has increased the variety and pace more than the geographic extent of human impact on the environment. A number of regions of the earth have experienced significant climatic changes closely related in time to ...

Global Climate Responses to Land Use and Land Cover Changes Over the Past Two Millennia

A reconstructed land use/land cover change (LUCC) dataset was used with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to conduct a climate sensitivity analysis over the past two millennia. Compared to a controlled experiment conducted with the CESM, the LUCC showed significant biogeophysical effects on global climate on multi-decadal to centennial time scales. The global annual mean temperature and p...

Global surface temperatures over the past two millennia

[1] We present reconstructions of Northern and Southern Hemisphere mean surface temperature over the past two millennia based on high-resolution ‘proxy’ temperature data which retain millennial-scale variability. These reconstructions indicate that late 20th century warmth is unprecedented for at least roughly the past two millennia for the Northern Hemisphere. Conclusions for the Southern Hemi...
