The true redshift distribution of Pre-SWIFT gamma-ray bursts

چکیده

SWIFT bursts appear to be more distant than previous bursts. We present the Boer & Gendre relation that link redshift and afterglow luminosities. Taking advantage of the XMMNewton, Chandra and BeppoSAX catalogs, and using this relation, we have investigated the redshift distribution of GRBs. We find that XMM burst sources with unknown redshift appear to be more distant than those with a known redshift. We propose that this effect may be due to a selection effect of pre-SWIFT optical observations.

Intensity Distribution and Luminosity Function of the Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts

Using the sample of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift-BAT before June 2007, we measure the cumulative distribution of the peak photon fluxes (logN–logP ) of the Swift bursts. Compared with the BATSE sample, we find that the two distributions are consistent after correcting the band pass difference, suggesting that the two instruments are sampling the same population of bursts. We a...

The redshift distribution of SWIFT Gamma-Ray Bursts: evidence for evolution

We predict the redshift distribution of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with Monte Carlo simulations. Our improved analysis constrains free parameters with three kinds of observation: (i) the logN − logP diagram of BATSE bursts; (ii) the peak energy distribution of bright BATSE bursts; (iii) the HETE2 fraction of X-ray rich GRBs and X-ray flashes. The statistical analysis of the Monte Carlo simula...

ON THE REDSHIFT DISTRIBUTION OF GAMMA RAY BURSTS IN THE Swift ERA

A simple physical model for long-duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs) is used to fit the redshift (z) and the jet opening-angle distributions measured with earlier GRB missions and with Swift. The effect of different sensitivities for GRB triggering is sufficient to explain the difference in the z distributions of the pre-Swift and Swift samples, with mean redshifts of 〈z〉 ∼= 1.5 and 〈z〉 ∼= 2.7, re...

The clustering of the luminosities of optical afterglows of long Gamma Ray Bursts

We studied the optical afterglows of the 24 pre–Swift Gamma–Ray Bursts with known spectroscopic redshift and published estimates of the optical extinction in the source frame. We find an unexpected clustering of the optical afterglow luminosities measured 12 hours (source frame time) after the trigger. For 21 out of 24 bursts, the distribution of the optical luminosities is narrower than the di...

A mean redshift of 2.8 for Swift gamma-ray bursts

The exceptionally high luminosities of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), gradually emerging as extremely useful probes of star formation, make them promising tools for exploration of the high-redshift Universe. Here we present a carefully selected sample of Swift GRBs, intended to estimate in an unbiased way the GRB mean redshift (zmean), constraints on the fraction of high-redshift bursts and an upper ...
