Have we detected the most luminous ULX so far ?

چکیده
We report the XMM–Newton detection of a moderately bright X–ray source (F0.5−7 ∼ 8.2 × 10 −14 erg cm s) superimposed on the outer arms of the inactive spiral galaxy MCG– 03-34-63 (z=0.0213). It is clearly offset from the nucleus (by about 19”) but well within the D25 ellipse of the galaxy, just along its bar axis. The field has also been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) enabling us to compute a lower limit of > 94 on the X–ray to optical flux ratio which, together with the X–ray spectrum of the source, argues against a background AGN. On the other hand, the detection of excess X–ray absorption and the lack of a bright optical counterpart argue against foreground contamination. Short–timescale variability is observed, ruling out the hypothesis of a particularly powerful supernova. If it is associated with the apparent host galaxy, the source is the most powerful Ultra–Luminous X– ray source (ULX) detected so far with a peak luminosity of ∼ 1.35× 10 erg s in the 0.5– 7 keV band. If confirmed by future multi–wavelength observations, the inferred bolometric luminosity (∼ 3 × 10 erg s) requires a rather extreme beaming factor (larger than 115) to accommodate accretion onto a stellar–mass black hole of 20 M⊙ and the source could represent instead one of the best intermediate–mass black hole candidate so far. If beaming is excluded, the Eddington limit implies a mass of > 2300M⊙ for the accreting compact object.

A thorough study of the intriguing X - ray emission from the Cartwheel ring
the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results from the high resolution Chandra observation of the Cartwheel galaxy. Many individual sources are resolved in the image, mostly associated with the outer ring. All detected sources have a very high X-ray luminosity (≥ 10 39 erg s −1) that classifies them as Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX). The bright...
متن کاملA Chandra observation of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 4485 / NGC 4490
We report the results of a 20 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the galaxy pair NGC 4485/4490. This is an interacting system containing a late-type spiral with an enhanced star formation rate (NGC 4490), and an irregular companion that possesses a disturbed morphology. A total of 29 discrete X-ray sources are found coincident with NGC 4490, but only one is found within NGC 4485. The sources rang...
متن کاملThe Ultra-Luminous X-ray Source Population from the Chandra Archive of Galaxies
One hundred fifty-four discrete non-nuclear Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULX) sources, with spectroscopically-determined intrinsic X-ray luminosities > 10 ergs s, are identified in 82 galaxies observed with Chandra’s Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Source positions, Xray luminosities, and spectral and timing characteristics are tabulated. Statistical comparisons between these X-ray properties and t...
متن کاملThe recurrent ultra - luminous X - ray transient NGC 253 ULX 1 ⋆
We present the results of ROSAT and XMM-Newton observations of the recurrent ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 253 ULX1. This transient is one of the few ULXs that was detected during several outbursts. The luminosity reached 1.4×1039 erg s−1 and 0.5×1039 erg s−1 in the detections by ROSAT and XMM-Newton, respectively, indicating a black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) with a mass of the compact o...
متن کاملObject with a 2 hour period in M 51
Ultra-luminous X-Ray Objects are off-nucleus point sources with L X = 10 39-10 41 erg/s but the nature of such systems are largely unidentified. Here we report a 2.1 hour period observed in a Chandra ACIS observation for ULX M51 X-7, which is located on the edge of a young star cluster in the star forming region in a spiral arm. In two ACIS observations separated by one year, the ULX changed fr...
