Bump Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds Metallicities, the Distances to the Lmc and Smc, and the Pulsation-evolution Mass Discrepancy

چکیده
We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Mag-ellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to determine metallicity is a new modelling technique introduced here. The metallicity, distance and reddening distributions for the two samples are in agreement with those of similar stellar populations in the literature. The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud is determined to be 18.54±0.018 and the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud is determined to be 18.93±0.024. The mean Cepheid metallicities are Z = 0.0091 ± 0.0007 and 0.0050 ± 0.0005 for the LMC and SMC, respectively. The masses derived from pulsation analysis are significantly less than those predicted by stellar evolutionary models with no or mild convective core overshoot. We show that this discrepancy can not be accounted for by uncertainties in our input opacities or in mass-loss physics. We interpret the observed mass discrepancy in terms of enhanced internal mixing in the vicinity of the convective – 2 – core during the main-sequence lifetime and find that the overshoot parameter Λ c rises from 0.688±0.009H p at the mean LMC metallicity to 0.746±0.009H p in the SMC.

Cepheid models based on self-consistent stellar evolution and pulsation calculations: the right answer?
We have computed stellar evolutionary models for stars in a mass range characteristic of Cepheid variables (3 < m/M < 12) for different metallicities representative of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds populations. The stellar evolution calculations are coupled to a linear non adiabatic stability analysis to get self-consistent mass-period-luminosity relations. The period luminosity relation...
متن کاملOpacity, Metallicity, and Cepheid Period Ratios in the Galaxy Andmagellanic Clouds
Linear pulsation calculations are employed to reproduce the bump Cepheid resonance (P 2/Po = 0.5 at Po ~ 10 days) and to model, individually, the PdPo period ratios for the dozen known Galactic beat Cepheids. Convection is ignored. The results point to a range of metallicity among the Cepheids, perhaps as large as 0.01 ~ Z ~ 0.02, with no evidence for any star exceeding Z = 0.02. We find masses...
متن کاملDo the Magellanic Cepheids Pose a New Puzzle?
The observed Magellanic Cloud (MC) Cepheid data pose a new challenge to both stellar structure and stellar evolution. The Fourier analysis of the LMC and SMC data indicate that the 2;1 resonance (P 2 /P 0 5 0.5) between the fundamental mode of pulsation and the second overtone occurs with a period P 0 of 210 days, just as in our Galaxy. The implications of this resonance are difficult to reconc...
متن کاملOGLE Cepheids have Lower Amplitudes in SMC than in LMC
We selected cepheids from the OGLE database for the Magellanic Clouds in the period range 10 ≤ P ≤ 10 days. There were 33 objects in the LMC and 35 in the SMC. We find that the median amplitude of cepheids in the LMC is 18% larger than in the SMC, a 4 σ effect. This implies that the period flux amplitude relation is not universal, and cannot be used to measure distances accurately. Subject head...
متن کاملTheoretical Models for Classical Cepheids: IV. Mean Magnitudes and Colors and the Evaluation of Distance, Reddening and Metallicity
We discuss the metallicity effect on the theoretical visual and near-infrared Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations of classical Cepheids, as based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time–dependent convective pulsating models at varying chemical composition. In view of the two usual methods of averaging (magnitude-weighted and intensity-weighted) observed magnitudes and col...
