چکیده

Previous studies on the relationship between obesity and circulating insulin-like growth factor (IGF) hormones show inconsistent findings and have not considered the possibility of racial/ethnic–specific differences that may exist. We therefore examined the relationship between obesity status [as measured by body mass index (BMI)] and plasma levels of the IGF proteins, IGF-I, IGF-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3), and the molar ratio of IGF-I/IGFBP-3 in Whites, African Americans, Latinos, Japanese Americans, and Native Hawaiians from the ongoing Hawaii and Los Angeles Multiethnic Cohort Study. We measured plasma IGF-I and IGFBP-3 by ELISA in a random sample of 811 Multiethnic Cohort participants (53% male, age range = 4782 at blood draw). In a multivariate regression of IGF-I levels, we found a statistically significant interaction between race/ethnicity and obesity status (P = 0.005). Plasma IGF-I levels declined with increasing BMI most dramatically in Latinos and Japanese. This decline was attenuated in Whites and absent in African-American and Native Hawaiian subjects. In Japanese, the quadratic term (BMI) was statistically significant in a multivariate model (P = 0.002). In Latinos, the adjusted least-squares mean IGF-I levels in ng/mL for BMI < 25, 25 to 29.99, and z30 were 184.6, 147.7, and 132.7, respectively. No interaction between race/ethnicity and BMI explained the plasma IGFBP-3 levels in these data. These results may help to resolve the uncertainty in the relationship between circulating IGF levels and obesity and highlight the potential importance of racial/ethnic– specific effects among these factors in explaining ethnic disparities in obesity-related cancers. Lifestyle and dietary correlates of plasma insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1), leptin, and C-peptide: the Multiethnic Cohort.

Circulating insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1), leptin, and insulin are 3 proteins modified by obesity and have been associated with cancer at several sites in past studies. We conducted a cross-sectional study to describe the correlation of these proteins with gender, race/ethnicity, anthropometric indexes, and dietary and lifestyle factors. We measured fasting plasma level...

P-64: The Relationship between Polymorphism in Gene of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I and The Serum Periparturient Concentration in Holstein Dairy Cows

Background: One of the most important metabolic factors affecting the reproductive activity is insulin-like growth factor-I (IGFI) concentration changes after calving. Recently, Maj et al. (2008) discovered a significant association between the IGF-I genotypes based on the 5'-untranslatedregion (5'-UTR) of IGF-I gene and the IGF-I blood level. The objective of this study is to investi...

Leptin in Breast Cancer: Its Relationship with Insulin, Estrogens and Oxidative Stress

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Several risk factors such as age, family history of breast cancer, marital status, early menarche and late menopause are related to breast cancer. Obesity is also a main health problem associated with breast cancer incidence and subsequent mortality. Association between obesity and expansion of breast cancer may be due to excessive sex steroid h...

بررسی ارتباط بین هورمون لپتین و مقاومت به انسولین در کودکان چاق ایرانی

Background: Leptin is an adipocyte- derived hormone that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity. Obesity is associated with insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance is one of the factors which have been suggested to affect leptin serum levels. There are few studies evaluating the relation between leptin level and insulin resistance in childhood and adolescence...
