چکیده

High dynamic range (HDR) displays capable of reproducing scenes of high luminance (exceeding 2,000 cd/m2) and contrast (more than 10,000:1) are a useful tool for research on visual performance, image quality or colour appearance. In this paper, we describe a projector-based HDR display, giving details on its hardware components and software for driving and calibrating the display. We report the colorimetric properties of the display: the colour reproduction accuracy, colour gamut and local contrast dependent on the size of displayed checkerboard pattern. To verify whether our display can produce local contrast inducing the colour that appears perfectly black to the observer, we conducted an experiment with human observers. Our results indicate that for the test pattern, the effective local contrast of our display (2500:1) is sufficient to produce perfectly black colour, which requires a contrast between 1300:1 and 2400:1.

High Dynamic Range 3D Display System with Projector and 3D Color Printer Output

This demonstration describes a new high dynamic range (HDR) display system that generates a physical 3D HDR image without using stereoscopic methods. To boost contrast beyond that obtained using either a hardcopy or a projector, we employ a multiprojection system to superimpose images onto a textured solid hardcopy that is output by a 3D printer or a rapid prototyping machine. The physical cont...

47.2: Luminance Management for Seamless Multi-Projector Displays

Multi-projector displays exhibit severe luminance variation. Matching luminance at every pixel to the pixel with most limited luminance range leads to severe degradation in the dynamic range of the display, rendering it practically useless. We present a new optimization technique to manage the luminance in a smooth constraint manner to maintain a perceptual seamlessness while improving the dyna...

2 16 shades of gray : high bit - depth projection using light intensity control

Projectors create grayscale images by outputting a series of bitplanes or binary images within a short time period. While this technique works well for projecting low bit-depth (8-bit) images, it becomes infeasible for high bit-depth (say, 16-bit) projection — a capability that is increasingly desirable in many applications including cinemas and gaming. Existing designs for high bit-depth proje...

A High-Dynamic Range Projection System

The dynamic range in many real-world environments surpasses the capabilities of traditional display technologies by several orders of magnitude. Recently, a novel display capable of displaying images with a dynamic range much closer to real world situations has been demonstrated. This was achieved through a spatially modulated backlight behind an LCD panel. Combined with the modulating power of...

A Nonlocal Variational Formulation for the Improvement of Tone Mapped Images

Due to technical limitations, common display devices can only reproduce images having a low range of intensity values (dynamic range). As a consequence, the dynamic range of images encoding real world scenes, which is large, has to be compressed in order for them to be reproduced on a common display, and this technique is called tone mapping. Because there is no ground truth to compare with, ev...
