The Current Star Formation Rate of the Local Universe

چکیده
The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) survey is a long-term project aimed at finding and analyzing star-forming galaxies detected by their Ha emission in Schmidt objective-prism plates. The instrumental setup limits the volume of the universe surveyed to a redshift z = 0.045. So far we have discovered several hundred emission-line galaxies (ELGs) undergoing star formation at a wide range of levels. Analyzing a complete sample of ELGs from the UCM survey, we have computed the Ha luminosity function for the star-forming galaxies in the surveyed volume of the universe. A Schechter function provides a good fit to the Ha luminosity function with the following parameters: a 5 21.3 H 0.2, L*(Ha) 5 10 ergs s, and f* 5 10 Mpc for H0 5 50 km s Mpc. Integrating over the full range of luminosities, we obtain an Ha luminosity density of 10 ergs s Mpc. Using the Ha emission as a star formation rate (SFR) estimator, this translates into a SFR density for the local universe of 0.01320.005 10.007 MJ yr Mpc in star-forming galaxies with EW(Ha 1 [N II]) . 10 Å and z = 0.045 for a Scalo initial mass function. This is the first observational determination of this quantity, which will provide a direct test of current galaxy formation and evolution models. متن کاملThe Star Formation Rate of the Local Universe from the Kpno International Spectroscopic Survey
The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is a wide-field survey for extragalactic emission-line objects being carried out with the Burrell Schmidt at Kitt Peak. The critical difference between this survey and classical objective-prism surveys for active galaxies is the use of a CCD detector which allows us to probe to much fainter magnitudes than previous photographic surveys. We have...
متن کاملGalaxy Evolution : Internally or Externally Driven ?
1 RESUMEN El resumen será traducido al español por los editores. The globally-averaged star formation rate in the Universe has been steadily declining since at least z ∼ 1. This may be due either to very local processes operating within the average galaxy, or to external, environmental effects. Specifically, the build-up of structure may be responsible for terminating star formation in some gal...
متن کاملLuminosity Function of the Local Universe 1
The measurement of the Star Formation Rate density of the Universe is of prime importance in understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. The [OII]λ3727 emission line flux, easy to measure up to z≈1.4 within deep redshift surveys in the optical and up to z≈5.4 in the near infrared, offers a reliable means of characterizing the star formation properties of high-z objects. In order to p...
متن کاملTesting the Relation between the Local and Cosmic Star Formation Histories
Recently, there has been great progress toward observationally determining the mean star formation history of the universe. When accurately known, the cosmic star formation rate could provide much information about Galactic evolution, if the Milky Way’s star formation rate is representative of the average cosmic star formation history. A simple hypothesis is that our local star formation rate i...
