51-20-45 The Importance of Queuing and Compression When Interconnecting LANs

Compression-performing modems significantly improve the file transfer process over LANs. The use of compression technology can provide even more effective results when applied to WAN. The use of compression-performing bridges or routers can reduce WAN bottlenecks, eliminate or reduce time-out problems caused by time-sensitive legacy mainframe communications protocols, and eliminate or postpone costly communications network upgrades. To illustrate the importance of data compression, this article begins by explaining the application of queuing theory to LAN interconnections and the effect of increased line or circuit use on network transfer delays.
