چکیده

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have a very large application potential in the rapid developing field of molecular electronics. Infinite single-wall metallic CNTs have theoretically a conductance of 4e/h because of the two electronic bands crossing the Fermi level. For finite size CNTs experiments have shown that other values are also possible, indicating a very strong influence of the contacts. We study electron transport in singleand double-wall CNTs contacted to metallic electrodes within the Landauer formalism combined with Green function techniques. We show that the symmetry of the contact region may lead to blocking of a transport channel. In the case of double-wall CNTs with both inner and outer shells being metallic, non-diagonal self energy contributions from the electrodes may induce channel mixing, precluding a simple addition of the individual shell conductances.

Nanofabrication of top-gated carbon nanotube-based transistors: Probing electron-electron interactions in one-dimensional systems

Carbon nanotubes are interesting for studying the remarkable electronic properties of one-dimensional (1D) quantum systems. Electron flow in such systems is not described by Fermi liquid theory—restricted dimensionality leads to the appearance of collective excitations—or Luttinger liquid behavior. Previous studies have probed Luttinger liquid behavior by tunneling into or between one-dimension...

Direct growth of carbon nanofibers to generate a 3D porous platform on a metal contact to enable an oxygen reduction reaction.

For carbon nanotube-based electronics to achieve their full performance potential, it is imperative to minimize the contact resistance between macroscale metal contacts and the carbon nanotube (CNT) nanoelectrodes. We have developed a three-dimensional electrode platform that consists of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) that are directly grown on a metal contact, such as copper (Cu). Carbon nanofiber m...

Contact dependence of carrier injection in carbon nanotubes: an ab initio study.

We combine ab initio density functional theory with transport calculations to provide a microscopic basis for distinguishing between good and poor metal contacts to nanotubes. Comparing Ti and Pd as examples of different contact metals, we trace back the observed superiority of Pd to the nature of the metal-nanotube hybridization. Based on large scale Landauer transport calculations, we suggest...

Towards Multi-Scale Modeling of Carbon Nanotube Transistors

Multiscale simulation approaches are needed in order to address scientific and technological questions in the rapidly developing field of carbon nanotube electronics. In this paper, we describe an effort underway to develop a comprehensive capability for multiscale simulation of carbon nanotube electronics. We focus in this paper on one element of that hierarchy, the simulation of ballistic CNT...

Experimental Study on Interfacial Thermal Transport of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube

Interfacial thermal transport of multi-walled carbon nanotube is explored by using T-type sensor. Reliable signals of heat flow through an individual nanotube were obtained. Estimated thermal boundary resistances between the end of CNT and solid surfaces do not show the clear dependency on material that has been predicted by the diffuse mismatch model treating graphite. This discrepancy is main...
