Calibration, validation, and sensitivity analysis: What's what

چکیده
One very simple interpretation of calibration is to adjust a set of parameters associated with a computational science and engineering code so that the model agreement is maximized with respect to a set of experimental data. One very simple interpretation of validation is to quantify our belief in the predictive capability of a computational code through comparison with a set of experimental data. Uncertainty in both the data and the code are important and must be mathematically understood to correctly perform both calibration and validation. Sensitivity analysis, being an important methodology in uncertainty analysis, is thus important to both calibration and validation. In this paper, we intend to clarify the language just used and express some opinions on the associated issues. We will endeavor to identify some technical challenges that must be resolved for successful validation of a April 26, 2005 SAND2004-6083J REVISED MANUSCRIPT 2 predictive modeling capability. One of these challenges is a formal description of a “model discrepancy” term. Another challenge revolves around the general adaptation of abstract learning theory as a formalism that potentially encompasses both calibration and validation in the face of model uncertainty. Models are helpful tools to predict runoff, sediment and soil erosion in watershed conservation practices. The objectives of this research were to investigate sensitivity analysis, calibration and validation of EUROSEM model in estimation of runoff in Tangh-e-Ravagh sub-basin of Karoun watershed. The model was tested in a one hectare experimental test site. The area was divided into nine elemen...
متن کاملChallenging the role of calibration, validation and sensitivity analysis in relation to models of health care processes.
Many applications of Operational Research in the context of health care involve processes of calibration, validation and sensitivity analysis. Indeed these processes seem to have such an elevated status that their absence is often regarded as a marker that a study is somehow substandard. Undoubtedly this may be the case, however there may also be circumstances where it is perfectly reasonable n...
متن کاملSimulation of Hydrological Balance in Eskandari Watershed Using SWAT Model and algorithms SUFI2
In order to manage watersheds, especially in mountainous areas that are not adequately station hydrological phenomena simulation is important. In this study, the SWAT model used to simulate hydrologic basin Eskandari. Calibration and validation of models for the periods 2006-1992 and 2009-2015, respectively, using the algorithm SUFI2 in software SWAT CUP was done. To evaluate the simulation re...
متن کاملKinematic runoff and erosion model efficiency assessment for hydrological simulation of semi-arid watersheds
Hydrologic modeling of semi-arid watersheds is imperative for the development of appropriate water and soil conservation plans. In the current study, the efficiency of Kinematic Runoff and Erosion model-version 2 (K2) model was used to evaluate water discharge and sediment load simulation of Bar watershed, located in the north-eastern part of Iran. The K2 model relies on the kinematic wave appr...
متن کاملSensitivity Analysis , Calibration , and Validations for a Multisite and Multivariable Swat Model
The ability of a watershed model to mimic specified watershed processes is assessed through the calibration and validation process. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) watershed model was implemented in the Beaver Reservoir Watershed of Northwest Arkansas. The objectives were to: (1) provide detailed information on calibrating and applying a multisite and multivariable SWAT model; (2) con...
