Map-based methods for estimating glacier equilibrium-line altitudes

چکیده
We examine the validity of two methods for estimating glacier equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) from topographic maps. The ELA determined by contour inflection (the kinematic ELA) and the mean elevation of the glacier correlate extremely well with the ELA determined from mass-balance data (observed ELA). However, the range in glacier elevations above sea level is much larger than the variation in ELA,making this correlation unhelpful. The data were normalized and a reasonable correlation (r ˆ 0.59) was found between observed and kinematic ELA.The average of the normalized kinematic ELAs was consistently located down-glacier from the observed ELA, consistent with theory. The normalized mean elevation of the glacier exhibited no correlation and suggests that the toe^headwall altitude ratio is not a good approximation for the ELA. Kinematic waves had no effect on the position of the kinematic ELA. Therefore, topographic maps of glacier surfaces can be used to infer the position of the ELA and provide a method for estimating past ELAs from historic topographic maps.

Equilibrium-Line Altitudes of Late Quaternary Glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain, Iran
Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of former glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain of the Zagros Mountain Range were reconstructed from glacial-geologic data on former ice limits by using various methods. In the study area various types of glacial landforms such as outwash fans, moraines and well developed glacial cirques are observed. The results suggest that ELA were depressed 1433 m below to prese...
متن کاملEquilibrium-line altitudes during the Last Glacial Maximum across the Brooks Range, Alaska
ABSTRACT: Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) were estimated for 383 reconstructed glaciers across the Brooks Range, northern Alaska, to investigate their regional pattern during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Glacier outlines were delimited based on published field mapping and the original interpretations of aerial photographs. Glacier margins were digitised from 1:63 360-scale maps into a geog...

Climate changes and remained geomorphic evidences due to the changes has been interested by geomorphologists in the world. Different researches have shown that world climate has been changed successively in Pleistocene so that with decreasing in temperature and probably increasing in precipitation, glaciers has been progressed and with increasing in temperature and decreasing in precipitation, ...
متن کاملEquilibrium-line altitudes of the Last Glacial Maximum for the Himalaya and Tibet: an assessment and evaluation of results
Contemporary equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) for glaciers in the high mountains of the Himalaya and Tibet have considerable variation because the region is influenced by two major climatic systems (the mid-latitude westerlies and the south Asian summer monsoon) and glaciers are subject to strong topographic controls. Reconstructions of past ELAs based on the former extent of glaciers are nume...
متن کاملWas Mount Taylor glaciated in the Late Pleistocene? An analysis based on field evidence and regional equilibrium line altitudes
Since reconnaissance work in the early 20th century, the existence of Pleistocene glaciers on Mount Taylor has been recognized in compilations of Rocky Mountain glaciation. This eroded composite volcano stands alone as the most prominent topographic element of the Colorado Plateau in west-central New Mexico. Its highest elevations, however, rise only a few hundred meters above the lowest late P...
