Evaluation of Wavelength Selective Mulch for Pepper Production
نویسنده
چکیده
Plasticulture studies were continued on bell pepper. Total marketable fruit yields of 4.85, 3.94 and 3.09 tons per acre were obtained from plants grown on silver, white, and black plastic mulches, respectively. Number of fruits produced per plant followed the same trend. Individual fruit weights of 85-117g were not significantly different among treatments. Fruit set as indicated by number of fruits too small to be of marketable size at termination of the experiment were significantly greater from plants grown on silver mulch. Later in the growing season, weed competition was very detrimental in this study, especially in a conventional, no plastic treatment.

Weed Control Effi cacy of Organic Mulches in Two Organically Managed Bell Pepper Production Systems
A 2-year field study in Lexington, Ky., evaluated weed control efficacy and infl uence on yields of several organic mulches in two organically managed bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) production systems. Five weed control treatments [straw, compost, wood chips, undersown white dutch clover (Trifolium repens) “living mulch,” and the organically approved herbicide corn gluten] were applied to two pr...

In a 2-yr study, the impacts of different plastic soil mulches, insecticides, and predator releases on Frankliniella thrips and their natural enemies were investigated in field-grown peppers. Ultraviolet light (UV)-reflective mulch significantly reduced early season abundance of adult thrips compared with standard black plastic mulch. This difference diminished as the growing seasons progressed...
متن کاملIncreased Net Profits Result from Greenhouse-grown Colored Pepper Compared to Field Production in Florida
The United States is one of few countries where the majority of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) produced are green colored and grown on raised beds with mulch and drip irrigation. Outside the U.S., most peppers are grown in greenhouses and harvested as mature, colored peppers that receive a premium value at market. Florida bell pepper producers are in direct competition with Mexico, Israel, a...
متن کاملYield potential and soil quality under alternative crop production practices for fresh market pepper
This study was conducted in Florida in 1999 and 2000 to examine the impact of alternative crop production practices on soil quality and yields of fresh market pepper (Capsicum annuum). Replicated field plots were established on an organic vegetable farm that had been under certification for 5 years and on a conventional pepper farm that had been fumigated with methyl bromide for 25 consecutive ...
متن کاملIrrigation and Nitrogen Best Management Practices Under Drip Irrigated Vegetable Production
Plastic mulch and drip irrigation are commonly used in high intensity vegetable production regions such as Florida. Drip irrigation can be much more efficient than sprinkler irrigation since only the root zone of the cropped area is irrigated. However, improper irrigation management can lead to wasted water and leaching of soluble chemicals such as nitrate. In this project, several irrigation t...
