MULTISCALE BIOMECHANICAL RELATIONSHIPS IN LIGAMENT by

چکیده
Healthy knee joints require structural stability through a full range of motion. Knee stability is primarily provided by a network of ligaments that resist abnormal forces and direct smooth articulations. Ligament malfunction has deleterious effects on balance, agility, and knee laxity. Altered knee laxity redistributes the stress transmitted across articulations, which may create regional stress concentrations that are potentially damaging to articular cartilage. The high incidence of knee ligament injuries and shortfalls of related treatments are thus adverse to knee joint health. As the function of ligament is essentially mechanical, understanding the tissue-scale and molecular-scale relationships that mechanically influence ligament are critical to functional restoration. The aim of this dissertation was to strengthen the scientific knowledge of mechanical relationships that impact ligament function in the knee. Toward this objective, a tissuescale relationship was investigated between the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). These knee ligaments are frequently injured and have inter-dependent functionality. At the molecular-scale, mechanical interactions between glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and collagen fibrils may impact gross ligament function. Therefore, the influence of these molecular relationships on ligament material behavior was inspected. Experimental and numerical modeling techniques (finite element analysis) were employed to fulfill these objectives. In an ACL-deficient knee, the MCL was more susceptible to damage during anterior tibial translation, as strains reached values

A Comprehensive Specimen-Specific Multiscale Data Set for Anatomical and Mechanical Characterization of the Tibiofemoral Joint
Understanding of tibiofemoral joint mechanics at multiple spatial scales is essential for developing effective preventive measures and treatments for both pathology and injury management. Currently, there is a distinct lack of specimen-specific biomechanical data at multiple spatial scales, e.g., joint, tissue, and cell scales. Comprehensive multiscale data may improve the understanding of the ...

Background: Ligament reconstruction is a common procedure in orthopedic surgery. Although several popular techniques are currently in use, new methods are proposed for secure fixation of the tendon graft into the bone tunnel. Purposes: We sought to introduce our new technique of Bashti bone plug for fixation of soft tissue graft in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and to compar...
متن کاملThe Stabilising Effect of the Anterior Oblique Ligament to Prevent Directional Subluxation at the Trapeziometacarpal Joint of the Thumb: A Biomechanical Cadaveric Study
Background: The trapeziometacarpal joint (TMCJ) is inherently unstable, relying on ligament restraint to preventsubluxation. Subluxation of the thumb in a dorsoradial direction is often observed in clinical practice, either after acuteligament injury or more commonly with osteoarthritis (OA). This subluxation follows loss of function of trapeziometacarpalligaments that stabilise this joint, res...
متن کاملA review of recent perspectives on biomechanical risk factors associated with anterior cruciate ligament injury.
There is considerable evidence to support a number of biomechanical risk factors associated with non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This paper aims to review these biomechanical risk factors and highlight future directions relating to them. Current perspectives investigating trunk position and relationships between strength, muscle activity and biomechanics during landing/cutt...

Ever since its description, anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee joint remains as the hotspot of controversies.Though it has been described under various descriptions, the structure gained its limelight when it was christenedas anterolateral ligament by Claes in 2013. The main reason for the controversies around it is the lack of concreteevidences regarding its attachments...
