BISHOP, SANFORD P., AND RUTH A. ,~LTSCHULD. hcreased gi’ycdytic metubolism in cardiac hypertrophy and congestive fniluw. Am. J. Physiol. 218(I): 153-159. 1970.-Lactate dehydrogenase isozymes and potential for glycolytic metabolism in vitro were studied in right and left ventricles of 11 dogs with experimental right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) and congestive heart failure (CHF), 8 dogs with acquired RVH and CHF due to DiroJilaria immitis, and 13 controls, Disc gel electrophoresis revealed that muscle-type (anaerobic) lactate dehydrogenase (M-LDH) was significantly increased in the hypertrophied right ventricles, and there was a lesser, but significant, increase of M-LDH in the left ventricle. Lactate production was significantly increased after Wmin anaerobic incubation of hypertrophied right ventricular homogenates compared to control right ventricular homogenates. Left ventricular homogenates from the D. z’mmitG group produced more lactate than control group left ventricles, Lactate production by left ventricles from dogs with experimentally produced RVH and CHF was not significantly different from control values. Glucose utilization by anaerobic homogenates was increased for both ventricles in the D. immitis group. These findings are interpreted as evidence for increased potential of the glycolytic pathways for energy production in the hypertrophied failing myocardium.

Evaluation of Cardiac Mitochondrial Function by a Nuclear Imaging Technique using Technetium-99m-MIBI Uptake Kinetics
Mitochondria play an important role in energy production for the cell. The proper function of a myocardial cell largely depends on the functional capacity of the mitochondria. Therefore it is necessary to establish a novel and reliable method for a non-invasive assessment of mitochondrial function and metabolism in humans. Although originally designed for evaluating myocardial perfusion, 99mTc...
متن کاملImpact of Socio-Economic Status on the Hospital Readmission of Congestive Heart Failure Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study
Background The aim of this study was to examine the impacts of multiple indicators of Socio-economic Status (SES) on Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) related readmission. Methods A prospective study consisting of 315 patients without the history of admission due to CHF was carried out in Tehran during 2010 and 2011. They were classified into quartiles based on their SES applying Principal Compo...
متن کاملIn vivo assessment of cardiac metabolism and function in the abdominal aortic banding model of compensated cardiac hypertrophy
AIMS Left ventricular hypertrophy is an adaptive response of the heart to chronic mechanical overload and can lead to functional deterioration and heart failure. Changes in cardiac energy metabolism are considered as key to the hypertrophic remodelling process. The concurrence of obesity and hypertrophy has been associated with contractile dysfunction, and this work therefore aimed to investiga...
متن کاملAnalysis of metabolic remodeling in compensated left ventricular hypertrophy and heart failure.
BACKGROUND Congestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with a change in cardiac energy metabolism. However, the mechanism by which this change is induced and causes the progression of CHF is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed the cardiac energy metabolism of Dahl salt-sensitive rats fed a high-salt diet, which showed a distinct transition from compensated left ventricular hypertrophy t...
متن کاملSkeletal muscle metabolism during exercise under ischemic conditions in congestive heart failure. Evidence for abnormalities unrelated to blood flow.
Previous studies with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance have demonstrated that patients with chronic congestive heart failure often exhibit increased glycolytic metabolism and impaired oxidative phosphorylation in exercising skeletal muscle, but the mechanism for these changes remains unresolved. This study was conducted to determine whether these abnormalities result from impaired blood flow or o...
