چکیده

-. Secondary electron yield measurements before and after Ar ion sputter cleaning were made on Nb and Nb compounds of interest for rf superconducting cavities. Total secondary electron yields (a) for primary energies 20-1500 eV were measured for solid Nb (a max = 1.3 at 300 eV), anodized NbzOs (a max = 1.2 at 300 eV) and powders of: Nb(a max = 1.0 at 400 eV), NbO (a max = 0.9 at 400 eV), NbOz (a max = 1.0 at 400ev), NbzOs (a max = 0.95 at 400 eV), NbC( 0 max = 0.8 at 400 eV) and NbN (a max = 0.8 at 500 eV). Determinations were made for Auger elemental sensitivities, and the relationship between Auger peak heights and oxide stoichiometry is discussed. The sputter etch rate of anodized NbzOs was measured by depth profiling anodic coatings of known thickness.

Surface Studies of Materials for Superconducting Cavities * I

A multitechnique system has been constructed to study materials and processes used for producing high Q superconducting cavities, while constantly maintaining UBV environment. Characterization of a small disc of superconducting material, e. g. Nb, is done by a variety of methods, including AES, XPS, EID, ellipsometry, sputter profiling, and secondary electron yield measurements. The samples may...

Surface Properties of Metal-Nitride and Metal-Carbide Films

Various effects occur which can prevent attainment of the high Q’s and/or the high gradient fields necessary for the operation of rf superconducting cavities. One of these effects, multipactor, both causes the cav-ty _to de&me during filling due to resonant secondary electron emission at the cavity walls, and lowers the Q by dissipative processes. TiN deposited onto the high field regions of ro...

STUDY ON NIOBIUM CARBIDE COATING FORMATION ON AISI L2 STEEL USING THERMO-REACTIVE DEPOSITION METHOD

In the present research, to form niobium carbide coating on the surface of AISI L2 steel Thermo-Reactive Deposition method (TRD) in a molten bath was used. Niobium carbide coating treatment was carried out at 1173 K, 1273 K, and 1373 K for 2, 4, and 8 hours. The molten bath contained 20wt.% borax (Na2B4O7), 5 wt.% boric acid (B2O3), and 75 wt.% ferro-niobium. The presence and properties of...

Kinetic Study of Niobium Carbide Coating Formation on AISI L2 Steel using Thermo-Reactive Deposition Technique

In the present study, Thermo-Reactive Deposition method (TRD) in a molten bath was used to form niobium carbide coating on AISI L2 steel. The coating was formed in five different composition of borax (Na2B4O7), boric acid (B2O3), and ferro-niobium. For all of the five compositions of molten bath, niobium carbide coating treatment was carried out at 1173 K, 1273 K, and 1373 K for 2, 4 and 8 hour...

Effect of electric current pulses on the microstructure and niobium carbide precipitates in a ferritic-pearlitic steel at an elevated temperature

Niobium is an important alloying element in steels. In the present work an effort has been made to investigate the effect of electropulsing on the niobium carbide (NbC) at an elevated temperature (800 oC). The results show that the electropulsing treatment can generate an evenly distributed NbC by decreasing the kinetics barriers for precipitation. It has been also found that a semi-transformed...
