Robert J. Aumann has been a central figure in developing game theory and establishing its key role in modern economics. Aumann has shaped the field through his fundamental and pioneering work. His contributions during the past half century are profound—conceptually, and often also mathematically—and at the same time crystal clear, elegant and illuminating. Among Aumann’s main scientific contributions, three areas stand out:
