چکیده

Dynamic load balancing on hypercube multiprocessors is considered with emphasis on quantized loads. Quantized loads are divisible only in a xed size. First, we show that a direct application of the well-known Dimension Exchange Method(DEM) to quantized loads may result in di erence in assigned loads to processors as large as logN units after balancing for a hypercube of size N . Then we propose a new method which reduces the maximum di erence by half to d 2 logNe. The claim is proved both by analysis of possible cases incrementing the di erence on each phase of balancing and by enumerating all possible combination of load for hypercubes of limited sizes using a computer. To estimate the accumulated e ect of balancing instances under real-world parallel processing environment, a simulation for hypercube multiprocessors using SLAM II tool is performed. The result shows about 30% improvement in speedup which results from reduced processing time, which in turn results from reduced nonuniformity.

An Improved Direct Dimension Exchange Method for Load Balancing in k-ary n-cube Multicomputers

This paper presents an improved direct dimension exchange method (DDE) for synchronous load balancing for k-ary n-cube multicom-puters. The new method is based on the improved DEM for hypercube. The original DEM when extended to the k-ary n-cube requires many iterations in exchanging loads between neighboring nodes to converge to a balanced state. The original DDE does not requires iteratively ...

Dynamic Load Balancing for Distributed

In this paper we study diffusion schemes for dynamic load balancing on message passing multiprocessor networks. One of the main results concerns conditions under which these dynamic schemes converge and their rates of convergence for arbitrary topologies. These results use the eigenstructure of the iteration matrices that arise in dynamic load balancing. We completely analyze the hypercube netw...

DDE: A Modified Dimension Exchange Method for Load Balancing in k-ary n-Cubes

| The dimension exchange method (DEM) was initially proposed as a load-balancing algorithm for the hypercube structure. It has been generalized to k-ary n-cubes. However, the k-ary n-cube algorithm must take many iterations to converge to a balanced state. In this paper, we propose a direct method to modify DEM. The new algorithm, Direct Dimension Exchange (DDE) method, takes load average in ev...
