Phenotypic integration in plants

چکیده

The interrelationships among phenotypic traits of plants has been of interest to plant evolutionary biologists for almost a century. Broadly defined, phenotypic integration refers to the correlations among traits within functional units (such as a flower). In this review, the classic research of Berg (1960) on the relationships among traits within floral modules, the dissociation of the floral module from the vegetative module are reviewed and advances in our understanding of these relationships is explored. Recent data on changes in integration of traits during development or across environments, as well as phylogenetic comparisons of integration, are highlighted. Common statistical approaches used to address these issues are briefly reviewed. In summary, it is argued that our understanding of the evolution of phenotypic integration will continue to advance as studies simultaneously examine the developmental, physiological and genetic mechanisms behind the genotype to phenotype map, and consider how selection acts on complex functional phenotypes.

Modularity and intra-floral integration in metameric organisms: plants are more than the sum of their parts.

Within-individual variation in virtually every conceivable morphological and functional feature of reiterated structures is a pervasive feature of plant phenotypes. In particular, architectural effects, regular, repeatable patterns of intra-individual variation in form and function that are associated with position are nearly ubiquitous. Yet, flowers also are predicted to be highly integrated. ...

Phenotypic integration and the potential for independent color evolution in a polymorphic spring ephemeral.

The genetic architecture of the total phenotype may substantially constrain or enhance the evolution of floral color within populations in response to multiple selection pressures. Using Claytonia virginica I previously identified opposing selection on floral color generated through herbivores and pathogens. Here I ask whether the evolution of floral color in this system is constrained or uncon...

A modular concept of phenotypic plasticity in plants.

Based on empirical evidence from the literature we propose that, in nature, phenotypic plasticity in plants is usually expressed at a subindividual level. While reaction norms (i.e. the type and the degree of plant responses to environmental variation) are a property of genotypes, they are expressed at the level of modular subunits in most plants. We thus contend that phenotypic plasticity is n...

Patterns of phenotypic correlations among morphological traits across plants and animals.

Despite the long-standing interest of biologists in patterns of correlation and phenotypic integration, little attention has been paid to patterns of correlation across a broad phylogenetic spectrum. We report analyses of mean phenotypic correlations among a variety of linear measurements from a wide diversity of plants and animals, addressing questions about function, development, integration ...

Experimental assessment of factors mediating the naturalization of a globally invasive tree on sandy coastal plains: a case study from Brazil

As all naturalized species are potential invaders, it is important to better understand the determinants of naturalization of alien plants. This study sought to identify traits that enable the alien tree Casuarina equisetifolia to overcome barriers to survival and reproductive and to become naturalized on sandy coastal plains. Restinga vegetation in Brazil was used as a model system to conceptu...
