چکیده

Presently, the simulated Delay Doppler Maps (DDMs) of oil slicked sea are limited to simplified scenarios which have the elevation angle of 90◦ (nadir reflection). In this paper, the detailed simulation process to generate GNSS-R DDMs of oil slicked sea surfaces under general scenarios is presented. The DDM of oil slicked sea surface under general scenarios are generated by combining the meansquare slope model for oil slicked/clean surfaces and the GNSS-R Zavorotny-Voronovich (Z-V) scattering model. The coordinate system transformation appropriate for general-elevation-angle scenarios are also incorporated. To validate the proposed approach, a comparison is made between the DDMs of a simplified scenario and a general scenario, which are generated based on the oil slick distribution of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill accident. Theoretical analysis reveals that oil slick may be detected within a 100 km radius coverage area around the specular point for a GNSS-R receiver under the general scenario with elevation angles of 72◦.

On the influence of ocean waves on simulated GNSS-R delay-doppler maps

Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), is an established technique that exploits GNSS signals of opportunity reflected from the surface of the ocean, to look primarily at the ocean surface roughness. The strength of this technique, and the primary motivation to carry it forward, is in the fact that GNSS signals are available globally, all the time and over the long term, and...

The Eddy Experiment II: GNSS-R speculometry for directional sea-roughness retrieval from low aircraft

We report on the retrieval of directional sea-roughness (the full directional mean square slope, including direction and isotropy) through inversion of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSS-R) data collected during an experimental flight at 1 km altitude. The emphasis is on the utilization of the entire Delay-Doppler Map (DDM) in order to infer ocean roughness directional paramet...

PAU/GNSS-R: Implementation, Performance and First Results of a Real-Time Delay-Doppler Map Reflectometer Using Global Navigation Satellite System Signals

Signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) were originally conceived for position and speed determination, but they can be used as signals of opportunity as well. The reflection process over a given surface modifies the properties of the scattered signal, and therefore, by processing the reflected signal, relevant geophysical data regarding the surface under study (land, sea, ice…)...

Sea Surface Roughness Estimation Using Signals from Multiple GNSS Satellites

Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) has recently drawn significant attention since it can be employed in a range of applications including sea state, ocean altimetry, soil moisture measurement, and disaster (e.g. flooding, bushfire, and earthquake) monitoring. Although research on GNSS-R in the past two decades has made advances, there are no (or few) real applications of ...

We report on the retrieval of directional sea-roughness (the full directional mean square slope, including MSS, direction and isotropy) through inversion of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSSR) and SOlar REflectance Speculometry (SORES) data collected during an experimental flight at 1000 m. The emphasis is on the utilization of the entire Delay-Doppler Map (for GNSS-R) or Til...
