Overshoot of curvature in visual apparent motion.

چکیده
If a curved line and a straight line are presented briefly, one above the other, in sequence to the eye, then, under appropriate conditions, visual apparent motion is obtained. Subjects report that the illusory figure moving and changing from the curved line to the straight line appears to overshoot the latter, gaining a small curvature in the opposite sense. Three experiments are described. In the first, the magnitude of this apparent curvature was quantified as a functioIY of the delay between the onsets of the curved line and straight line (the stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA). It is shown that overshoot in curvature cannot be attributed to inappropriate patterns of eye fixations. In the second experiment, the stimulus configuration was modified to reveal the contribution to apparent curvature of classical curvature-contrast effects. Curvature overshoot due to apparent motion alone was thus estimated as a function of SOA. In the third experiment, an analogous position overshoot was measured for apparent motion elicited by two brief sequentially presented parallel line segments. It is argued that a combination of such position overshoots cannot explain curvature overshoot. Two schemes of a more general kind that might be used to interpret curvature overshoot are then outlined. One scheme is based on a neural-net model of apparent motion, and the other on a functional model of apparent motion that operates by laws analogous to those governing real physical motion.

Comparison of the Effect of Corrective Playing in Land and Water on the Curvature Kyphosis and Shoulder Abduction in Boys With Intellectual Disability
Abstract Background & purpose: One of the most common skeletal deformities in children with intellectual disability is kyphosis. Kyphosis decreases the range of shoulder joint motion. This study aims to compare of the effect of eight-weeks corrective playing in land and water on the curvature kyphosis and shoulder joint range of motion in boys with intellectually disability. متن کاملSelf-motion perception during locomotor recalibration: more than meets the eye.
Do locomotor aftereffects depend specifically on visual feedback? In 7 experiments, 116 college students were tested, with closed eyes, at stationary running or at walking to a previewed target after adaptation, with closed eyes, to treadmill locomotion. Subjects showed faster inadvertent drift during stationary running and increased distance (overshoot) when walking to a target. Overshoot seem...
متن کاملMagneto-electro-mechanical size-dependent vibration analysis of three-layered nanobeam with initial curvature considering thickness stretching
Thickness stretching effect based on shear and normal deformation theory is used in this paper for magneto-electro-elastic vibration analysis of a three-layered curved nanobeam including a nano core and two piezo-magnetic layers. Size-dependency is included in derivation of governing equations of motion based Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory. The initial curvature is accounted in calculatio...
متن کاملMutual influences of intermodal visual/tactile apparent motion and auditory motion with uncrossed and crossed arms.
Intra-modal apparent motion has been shown to be affected or 'captured' by information from another, task-irrelevant modality, as shown in cross-modal dynamic capture effect. Here we created inter-modal apparent motion between visual and tactile stimuli and investigated whether there are mutual influences between auditory apparent motion and inter-modal visual/tactile apparent motion. Moreover,...
متن کاملSurface Geometry from Cusps of Apparent Contours
It is known that the deformations of the apparent contours of a surface under perspective projection and viewer motion enable the recovery of the geometry of the surface, for example by utilising the epipolar parametrization. These methods break down with apparent contours that are singular i.e. with cusps. In this paper we study this situation in detail and show how, nevertheless, the surface ...
