Phase-resolved Faraday rotation in pulsars

چکیده

We have detected significant Rotation Measure variations for 9 bright pulsars, as a function of pulse longitude. An additional sample of 10 pulsars showed a rather constant RM with phase, yet a small degree of RM fluctuation is visible in at least 3 of those cases. In all cases, we have found that the rotation of the polarization position angle across our 1.4 GHz observing band is consistent with the λ law of interstellar Faraday Rotation. We provide for the first time convincing evidence that RM variations across the pulse are largely due to interstellar scattering, although we cannot exclude that magnetospheric Faraday Rotation may still have a minor contribution; alternative explanations of this phenomenon, like erroneous de-dispersion and the presence of nonorthogonal polarization modes, are excluded. If the observed, phase-resolved RM variations are common amongst pulsars, then many of the previously measured pulsar RMs may be in error by as much as a few tens of rad m.

Antisymmetry in the Faraday Rotation Sky Caused by a Nearby Magnetized Bubble

Rotation measures of pulsars and extragalactic point sources have been known to reveal largescale antisymmetries in the Faraday rotation sky with respect to the Galactic plane and halo that have been interpreted as signatures of the mean magnetic field in the Galactic halo. We describe Faraday rotation measurements of the diffuse Galactic polarized radio emission over a large region in the nort...

Pulsar Rotation Measures and the Large-scale Structure of Galactic Magnetic Field

The large-scale magnetic field of our Galaxy can be probed in three dimensions using Faraday rotation of pulsar signals. We report on the determination of 223 rotation measures from polarization observations of relatively distant southern pulsars made using the Parkes radio telescope. Combined with previously published observations these data give clear evidence for large-scale counterclockwise...

Polarization Patterns in Pulsar Radio Emission

A variety of intriguing polarization patterns are created when polarization observations of the single pulses from radio pulsars are displayed in a twodimensional projection of the Poincaré sphere. In many pulsars, the projections produce two clusters of data points that reside at antipodal points on the sphere. The clusters are formed by fluctuations in polarization amplitude that are parallel...

Determination of Linear Polarization and Faraday Rotation of Pulsar Signals from Spectral Intensity Modulation

Most of the known pulsars are sources of highly linearly polarized radiation. Faraday rotation in the intervening medium rotates the plane of the linear polarization as the signals propagate through the medium. The Rotation Measure (RM), which quantifies the amount of such rotation as a function of wavelength, is useful in studying the properties of the medium and in recovering the intrinsic po...

A study of multifrequency polarization pulse profiles of millisecond pulsars

We present high signal-to-noise ratio, multifrequency polarization pulse profiles for 24 millisecond pulsars that are being observed as part of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project. The pulsars are observed in three bands, centred close to 730, 1400 and 3100 MHz, using a dual-band 10 cm/50 cm receiver and the central beam of the 20-cm multibeam receiver. Observations spanning approximately si...
