Inhibitory control of angiotensin-converting enzyme by ramipril in migraine
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Renin-angiotensin systems (RAS) are involved in the physiology of migraine. Ramipril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. We tested whether ramipril has an effect on migraine. Methods: The study was designed as a prospective open-labeled trial in a single center. All patients were asked to maintain a headache diary. Ramipril was administered at 5mg/day (2.5mg twice a day) and subjects were checked every 4 weeks up to 12 weeks. Results: The mean number of headache days was 19.9 ± 11.2 days per month at baseline, and 12.0 ± 11.5 at 12 weeks (p<0.001 vs. baseline) with a responder rate of 41.9%. Stratified analysis by migraine frequency (15 days a month > vs. <15 days a month) did not show a difference. Mean blood pressure was not altered. Conclusions: Ramipril prevented migraine attacks independently from blood pressure. This result supports a link between renin-angiotensin system and migraine pathophysiology (Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT01402479). Neurology Asia 2013; 18(3) : 289 – 291

Inhibitory Effects of Germinal Angiotensin Converting Enzyme by Medicinal Plants Used in Iranian Traditional Medicine as Antihypertensive
Background & Aim: Medicinal plants are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of different diseases such as hypertension. Since inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is one of the involved mechanisms in control of hypertension, in this study the inhibitory effect of 20 medicinal plants on ACE was investigated. Methods: The medicinal plants were collected, powdered, extracted...
متن کاملAngiotensin converting enzyme in brush-border membranes of avian small intestine.
Angiotensin converting enzyme activity was identified in brush-border membranes purified from the small intestinal epithelium of the common grackle, Quiscalus quiscula. Angiotensin converting enzyme was enriched 20-fold in the membrane preparation, compared with intestinal epithelial cell scrapes, and was coenriched with the brush-border markers, alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase N. The k...
متن کاملRole of kinins and nitric oxide in the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors on neointima formation.
Marked neointima formation occurs after balloon injury to the intima of rat arteries. Angiotensin II has been implicated as a growth factor in this process, since angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors block neointima formation after injury. However, ACE is an important kininase, and its inhibitors may act in part by a kinin-mediated mechanism. Kinins are also known to stimulate synthes...
متن کاملSalt blocks the renal benefits of ramipril in diabetic hypertensive rats.
To establish if the benefit of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor therapy in retarding progressive diabetic renal injury is due to a specific intrarenal effect of the systemic hypotensive effect, we studied the effect of long-term ramipril treatment on blood pressure, glomerular filtration rate, and urinary protein excretion in streptozotocin-diabetic spontaneously hypertensive rats. The h...
متن کاملHypotensive, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory and diuretic activities of the aqueous-methanol extract of Ipomoea reniformis
Ipomoea reniformis Roxb. (Convolvulaceae) is a small, weedy herb used for the management of cardiac problems in traditional systems of medicine in India and Pakistan. Objective of the present study is to investigate the hypotensive, diuretic and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities of the aqueous-methanol (30:70) crude extract of the dried aerial parts of I. reniformis (Ir....
