چکیده

Critics in turn have raised a number of now-classic challenges. According to intellectualism, deliberately choosing which beliefs to hold is practically impossible; according to the many-gods objection, Pascal’s wager begs the question and hence is irrational; according to evidentialism, Pascalian reasoning is epistemically irresponsible and hence immoral; and according to various paradoxes, reference to infinite values is decisiontheoretic non-sense.

Towards a Frequentist’s Approach to Pascal’s Wager

Pascal’s wager attempts to provide a mortal with a proper choice of believing or not believing in a god, based on the expected reward of a given belief. It is essentially a Bayesian approach to the existence of a supreme being, as it deals with a degree of belief approach to proability. However, given the ineffability of a supreme being, the idea of finding a Bayesian prior for performing infer...

A Modern Pascal's Wager for Mass Electronic Surveillance

Debates about the moral permissibility of mass electronic surveillance often turn on whether consequentialist considerations legitimately trump relevant deontological rights and principles. In order to establish such overriding consequences, many proponents of mass surveillance employ a modern analogue of Pascal’s wager: they contend that the (negative) consequences of no surveillance are so se...

The Devil’s Advocate

Over the centuries, many different arguments have been used to support the belief in God. These range from the abstruse and theoretical, such as Anselm’s famous Ontological Argument, to the relatively down-to-earth and practical, such as Pascal’s Wager; but nearly all of them share a common weakness on which I intend to focus. I shall claim that the theistic arguments typically take for granted...

Pascal’s Wager is a Lie: An Epistemic Interpretation of the Ultimate Pragmatic Argument

Piquant, convincing, powerful, and mildly heretical—Pascal’s Wager is a philosopher’s dream. But despite its initial appeal, the Wager seems to fail on logical grounds. In truth, it is a philosopher’s nightmare. Scholars scrutinize the Wager in isolation, using mathematics and logic to unravel the entire argument. But the Wager is neither a mathematical claim nor an isolated passage. Rather, Bl...

Taking Stock of Infinite Value: Pascal's Wager and Relative Utilities

Among recent objections to Pascal’s Wager, two are especially compelling. The first is that decision theory, and specifically the requirement of maximizing expected utility, is incompatible with infinite utility values. The second is that even if infinite utility values are admitted, the argument of the Wager is invalid provided that we allow mixed strategies. Furthermore, Hájek (Philosophical ...
