A model of collaboration network formation with heterogeneous skills
نویسنده
چکیده
Collaboration networks provide a method for examining the highly heterogeneous structure of collaborative communities. However, we still have limited theoretical understanding of how individual heterogeneity relates to network heterogeneity. The model presented here provides a framework linking an individual’s skill set to her position in the collaboration network, and the distribution of skills in the population to the structure of the collaboration network as a whole. This model suggests that there is a non-trivial relationship between skills and network position: individuals with a useful combination of skills will have a disproportionate number of links in the network. Indeed, in some cases, an individual’s degree is non-monotonic in the number of skills she has—an individual with very few skills may outperform an individual with many. Special cases of the model suggest that the degree distribution of the network will be skewed, even when the distribution of skills is uniform in the population. The degree distribution becomes more skewed as problems become more difficult, leading to a community dominated by a few high-degree superstars. This has striking implications for labor market outcomes in industries where production is largely the result of collaborative effort. Acknowledgement. Collaboration Network Formation and the Demand for Problem Solvers with Heterogenous Skills
Collaborative problem solving is important in a wide range of contexts, including economic production, product development, academic research, and policy making. Here, I present a formal model of collaborative problem solving, in which individuals with heterogeneous skill sets collaborate to solve problems. I show that the number of problems an individual solves is a supermodular function of he...
متن کاملA Collaborative Blood Distribution System in a Network of Hospitals based on their Normal and Emergency Requests: a Mathematical Model and Solution
Background and Objectives: A blood distribution network orchestrates distribution of safe blood products to hospitals. Blood shortage and blood wastage are two important factors which may affect efficiency of blood distribution network. Service delivery time is another factor that refers to the time interval between blood request by a hospital and transfusing it to the patient....
متن کاملConnections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...
متن کاملA Novel Combinatorial Approach to Discrete Fracture Network Modeling in Heterogeneous Media
Fractured reservoirs contain about 85 and 90 percent of oil and gas resources respectively in Iran. A comprehensive study and investigation of fractures as the main factor affecting fluid flow or perhaps barrier seems necessary for reservoir development studies. High degrees of heterogeneity and sparseness of data have incapacitated conventional deterministic methods in fracture network modelin...

Abstract Background and Aim: Cooperation and participation for the progress and success of students with visual impairment has different dimensions and is of particular importance. Joint collaboration is an agreement and process of working together to achieve a mutual goal. Every learner is strongly influenced by the social context in which he lives. This study aimed to investigate joint co...
