Physiologic changes during normal pregnancy and delivery.

چکیده
The major adaptations of the maternal cardiovascular system that progress throughout gestation may unmask previously unrecognized heart disease and result in significant morbidity and mortality. Most of these changes are almost fully reversed in the weeks and months after delivery. Hemodynamic changes during pregnancy include increased blood volume, cardiac output (CO), and maternal heart rate; decreased arterial blood pressure; decreased systemic vascular resistance. CO increases up to 30% in the first stage of labor, primarily because of increased stroke volume; maternal pushing efforts in the second stage of labor can increase CO by as much as 50%.

A Review of Hemostasis in Normal Pregnancy and Puerperium
Significant alterations are seen in hemostatic system during normal pregnancy and puerperium. Overall, it is a state of hypercoagulability and hypofibrinolysis mitigating the risk of severe bleeding during placental separation at delivery. On the flip side, it threatens a pregnant woman for thrombosis with the risk being four to six folds more in comparison to a non-pregnant woman. It is import...

Background: Pregnancy and postnatal period are associated with significant psychological and physiological changes, which might sometimes induce pathological variations, as well. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of physiologic delivery education on mental health of pregnant women. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 50 pregnant women, who were referred to three healthcare cent...
متن کاملAssociation of Using Oxytocin during Labor and Breastfeeding Behaviors of Infants within Two Hours after Birth
Background: Opioids are used to relieve pain during labor and may affect the neurobehavioral conditions of infants. However, effects of using drugs, such as oxytocin, as a routine component of pre- and post-delivery care on the breastfeeding behaviors of newborns remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the maternal use of oxytocin during labor and breastfe...
متن کاملGuidelines for managing hypotension during spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery
Pregnancy produces significant hemodynamic changes allowing the cardiovascular system to meet the increased metabolic demands of pregnancy. The pregnant patient with normal cardiac function can accommodate significant alterations in the cardiovascular system without difficulty. However, these changes have major implications for anesthetic management, especially in high-risk patients. Knowledge ...

Originally, the puerperium was defined as the period of confinement during and just after birth; it is now generally accepted to mean the 6 weeks after delivery. The puerperium has also been referred to as “the fourth trimester.” This period is marked by multiple physiologic changes (Table 123.1) as the woman returns to the prepregnant state, including healing physically from any trauma during ...
متن کاملPhosphorus-31 brain MR spectroscopy in women during and after pregnancy compared with nonpregnant control subjects.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A reversible decrease in brain size has been demonstrated during normal pregnancy that is maximal at term and returns to normal after many months. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to use phosphorus-31 MR spectroscopy to determine if metabolic changes explain this physiologic event. METHODS Pregnant women (n = 12) were examined at term and up to 6 months after ...
