Fiber Fuse Propagation and Its Suppression in Hole-Assisted Fibers

چکیده
We examined the characteristics of fiber fuse propagation in hole-assisted fibers (HAF). The fiber fuse propagated in the same way as in conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) when the diameter of an inscribed circle linking the air holes (c) was much larger than the diameter of the melted area (Dmelted). The melted area is caused by fiber fuse propagation and Dmelted is assumed to be almost the same size as the plasma. However, when c was much smaller than Dmelted, the fiber fuse did not propagate in HAF with input powers above 15 W at 1480 and 1550 nm. This result indicates that the threshold power of fiber fuse propagation in HAF can be at least 10 times larger than that in conventional SMF in the optical communication band. We also observed the dynamics of fiber fuse termination at a splice point between HAF and a conventional fiber by using a high-speed camera, when c was much smaller than Dmelted. We consider that the reduction in gas density caused by the air holes results in fiber fuse termination. When c was almost the same as Dmelted, we observed a new propagation mode and its dynamics for a fiber fuse with a damage track whose period was approximately 30 times longer than that in conventional SMF. We also made the first observation of a new threshold power (upper threshold) for a fiber fuse. key words: hole-assisted fiber (HAF), fiber fuse, high power

Optical Fiber for High-Power Optical Communication
We examined optical fibers suitable for avoiding such problems as the fiber fuse phenomenon and failures at bends with a high power input. We found that the threshold power for fiber fuse propagation in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and hole-assisted fiber (HAF) can exceed 18 W, which is more than 10 times that in conventional single-mode fiber (SMF). We considered this high threshold power in P...
متن کاملDestruction of silica fiber cladding by the fuse effect.
The phenomenon of destruction of silica fiber cladding by the fiber fuse effect has been observed for the first time to the authors' knowledge. Experiments on the optical discharge propagation along a fiber were conducted with fibers of decreased cladding thickness. The destruction of fiber cladding led to expansion of the optical discharge plasma and to a decrease of its density. This resulted...
متن کاملPropagation mechanism of polymer optical fiber fuse
A fiber fuse phenomenon in polymer optical fibers (POFs) has recently been observed, and its unique properties such as slow propagation, low threshold power density, and the formation of a black oscillatory damage curve, have been reported. However, its characterization is still insufficient to well understand the mechanism and to avoid the destruction of POFs. Here, we present detailed experim...
متن کاملDesign Characteristic and Performance Analysis of Hole Assisted Fiber for Long Haul Optical Fiber Networks
In conventional photonic crystal fibers (PCF’s),the cladding structure is usually formed by air holes with the same diameter arrayed in regular triangular lattice. However, in index guiding PCF’s means in Hole Assisted Fiber, the periodicity in the cladding region is not essential to confine the guiding light in to the high-index core region. Hole Assisted Fiber (HAF) technology is investigat...
متن کاملStudy on the Damaging of Dyed Cotton Fibers with Direct Dye in Spinning Processes and its Effect on the Properties of Cotton Mélange Yarn
The influence of dyeing and spinning on the characteristics of cotton fibers and its impact on the properties of cotton mélange yarn has been investigated. Grey cotton fibers with mean fiber length and fineness of 29 mm and 4.2 micronair were pre-treated and dyed. Three ring yarns were spun from 100 % grey cotton (R.R.Y), 50-50 % blend of dyed and grey cotton (M.R.Y) and 100 % dyed cotton fiber...
