چکیده

Semantic theories of natural language associate meanings with utterances by providing meanings for lexical items and rules for determining the meaning of larger units given the meanings of their parts. Meanings are often assumed to combine via function application, which works well when constituent structure trees are used to guide semantic composition. However, we believe that the functional structure of Lexical-Functional Grammar is best used to provide the syntactic information necessary for constraining derivations of meaning in a cross-linguistically uniform format. It has been difficult, however, to reconcile this approach with the combination of meanings by function application. In contrast to compositional approaches, we present a deductive approach to assembling meanings, based on reasoning with constraints, which meshes well with the unordered nature of information in the functional structure. Our use of linear logic as a ‘glue’ for assembling meanings allows for a coherent treatment of the LFG requirements of completeness and coherence as well as of modification and quantification.

Negative Polarity Licensing at the Syntax-Semantics Interface

Recent work on the syntax-semantics interface (see e.g. (Dalrymple et al., 1994)) uses a fragment of linear logic as a 'glue language' for assembling meanings compositionally. This paper presents a glue language account of how negative polarity items (e.g. ever, any) get licensed within the scope of negative or downward-entailing contexts (Ladusaw, 1979), e.g. Nobody ever left. This treatment o...

Identification of Safe Assembly Points in Emergencies in a Gas Refinery of the South Pars Gas Complex Using Fuzzy Logic Model

INTRODUCTION: Crisis management is of critical importance in the oil and gas industries due to the increasing occurrence of accidents in these areas. One of the most important issues regarding crisis management in such industries is the identification of safety assembly points where employees should gather in emergencies. This study aimed to identify the safe points in a refinery using geo...

Transfer Constructors

We present a modular, lexicalized, reversible and ambiguity preserving approach to semantic based transfer on sets of linear logic meaning and transfer constructors. In many cases, transfer on sets of meaning constructors (rather than on derived disambiguated meaning assignments) obviates the need for spurious multiple transfer on disambiguations. We concentrate on adjuncts and embedded head sw...

Reasoning on Assembly Code using Linear Logic

We present a logic for reasoning on assembly code. The logic is an extension of intuitionistic linear logic with greatest fixed points, pointer assertions for reasoning about the heap, and modalities for reasoning about program execution. One of the modality corresponds to the step relation of the semantics of an assembly code interpreter. Safety is defined as the greatest fixed point of this m...
