Comments on Airport Remediation Following a Chemical Terrorist Attack Articles

چکیده
I am pleased that the two articles on Airport Remediation following a Chemical Terrorist Attack are being published in the Journal of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment since that will make them available to a larger audience and facilitate updating. Agency guideline reports tend to be shelved and forgotten and the two articles in this report should avoid that fate since they are much more than remediation guidelines. The first article briefly summarizes the toxicology and the history of previous exposure scenarios with chemical warfare (CW) agents and provides a basis for the decision criteria outlined in the second article. The development of the methodology used in this process will be of particular interest to risk assessors but these articles will also be of interest to researchers who have worked with chemical warfare agents and irritant chemicals. I was particularly interested in the documentation of persistence of CW agents on different surfaces and the reliability of extrapolating information from a relatively small group of agents and other readers will find useful information in the data base in these articles.

Developing Health-Based Pre-Planning Clearance Goals for Airport Remediation Following a Chemical Terrorist Attack: Decision Criteria for Multipathway Exposure Routes
In the event of a chemical terrorist attack on a transportation hub, post-event remediation and restoration activities necessary to attain unrestricted facility re-use and re-entry could require hours to multiple days. While timeframes are dependent on numerous variables, a primary controlling factor is the level of pre-planning and decision-making completed prior to chemical release. What foll...

متن کاملCommentary on Watson et al.'s Articles on Airport Remediation Following a Chemical Terrorist Attack
It was an honor to be associated in the review process with the work done by Dr. Watson and co-authors (2011a,b) on the first-time, open-literature documentation of multi-pathway, health-based remediation exposure guidelines for toxic industrial compounds and chemical warfare agents in preparation for a terrorist attack. Such preliminary planning is vital to the country’s security. One would im...

Recent events have highlighted the vulnerabilities of airports and aircraft to terrorist attack, and has led to an increased police presence at many airports. Airport policing is designed to protect airport terminals and aircraft from terrorist attack. This paper assesses the risks and cost-effectiveness of Australian Federal Police (AFP) airport counter-terrorism (CT) policing at Australian ai...
متن کاملHow to reply to referees' comments when submitting manuscripts for publication
Background: The publication of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals is a fairly complex and stepwise process that involves responding to referees’ comments. Little guidance is available in the biomedical literature on how to deal with such comments. Objective: The objective of this article is to provide guidance to notice writers on dealing with peer review comments in a way that maxim...
