چکیده
________________________________________________________ Inner speech monitoring deficit : a study of auditory verbal hallucinations Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are speech perceptions in the absence of relevant external stimuli. Some accounts of AVHs claim that a deficit in inner speech monitoring causes the own verbal thoughts of the patient to be perceived as external voices. These theories have been developed using a classical speech motor control model, in which self-monitoring can be implemented. In order to examine the inner speech monitoring deficit account, the present study aimed at collecting speech muscle activity during AVHs, overt speech and rest. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used on eleven schizophrenia patients. Our results show an increase in muscular activity in the orbicularis oris inferior muscle during non-subvocalized AVHs, as compared with rest. This evidence that AVHs are self-generated inner speech is discussed in the framework of a speech motor control model. BACKGROUND Auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia have been linked to defective monitoring of one's own verbal thoughts. Previous studies have shown that patients with auditory verbal hallucinations show attenuated activation of brain regions involved with auditory processing during the monitoring of inner speech. However, there are no functional magnetic resonance imaging studies expl...

BACKGROUND The neurocognitive basis of auditory hallucinations is unclear, but there is increasing evidence implicating abnormalities in processing inner speech. Previous studies have shown that people with schizophrenia who were prone to auditory hallucinations demonstrated attenuated activation of brain areas during the monitoring of inner speech. AIMS To investigate whether the same patter...

PURPOSE Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are speech perceptions in the absence of external stimulation. According to an influential theoretical account of AVHs in schizophrenia, a deficit in inner-speech monitoring may cause the patients' verbal thoughts to be perceived as external voices. The account is based on a predictive control model, in which individuals implement verbal self-monito...
