چکیده

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org W the past decade, the evidence has become unequivocal that global climate is changing and is having widespread effects on biodiversity (IPCC 2007; Bellard et al. 2012). Human understanding of the myriad ways that ecological systems are responding to this unprecedented change is improving, but because biological responses are complex and sometimes unexpected, the full range of possible outcomes remains highly uncertain. In this paper, we assess recent advances regarding the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the US. By summarizing key messages of a technical input (Staudinger et al. 2012) to the 2014 National Climate Assessment (NCA), which were derived from an extensive literature review, we address (1) current and future effects of climate change on biodiversity, (2) vulnerabilities of and risks to biodiversity, and (3) challenges facing biodiversity conservation. Specifically, we evaluate temporal (eg phenology), spatial (eg range), and organismal (eg physiology) responses of biological systems to climate variables (Table 1), as documented in observational studies, field and laboratory experiments, and various modeling approaches published since the last NCA in 2009 (USGCRP 2009). Within this framework we consider aspects of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine biodiversity, at scales ranging from genes to populations, species, communities, and ecosystems. Finally, to inform natural resource managers and decision makers on biodiversity–climate-change issues, we also discuss critical knowledge gaps, research initiatives, and best management practices. The key findings of the workgroup are shown in italic at the beginning of each of the following sections.

Climate change scenarios generated by using GCM outputs and statistical downscaling in an arid region

Two statistical downscaling models, the non-homogeneous hidden Markov model (NHMM) and the Statistical Down–Scaling Model (SDSM) were used to generate future scenarios of both mean and extremes in the Tarim River basin, which were based on nine combined scenarios including three general circulation models (GCMs) (CSIRO30, ECHAM5,and GFDL21) predictor sets and three special report on emission sce...

Impacts of projected changes and variability in climatic data on major food crops yields in Rwanda

This paper investigated the response of major food crop yields namely beans, cassava, Irish potatoes, maize and sweet potatoes to ongoing changes in climate inRwanda. The projected daily precipitation and temperature data for the period2000-2050 used in this study were generated by stochastic weather generator(LARS-WG) from daily raw data for the period 1961 -2000. These data werecollected from ...

Modeling the effect of climate change to the potential invasion range of Piper aduncum Linnaeus

The potential effect of invasive plant species on biodiversity is one of most important subject of inquiry at present. In many parts of the world, the alarming spread of these plants has been documented. Knowing that climate exerts a dominant control over the distribution of plant species, predictions can therefore be made to determine which areas the species would likely spread under a climate...

Regional climate change scenarios and their impacts on water requirements for wheat production in Iran

We simulate the effect of climate change on water requirements of cold seasonwheat in various climatic zones of Iran. The research considers both observedclimate (temperature and precipitation) changes during recent decades (1960-2009)based on instrumental records and projected future changes to 2100 based on theMAGICC/SCENGEN 5.3 compound model. 20 General Circulation models are usedbased on a...

The impacts of climate change and disturbance on spatio-temporal trajectories of biodiversity in a temperate forest landscape

1. The ongoing changes to climate challenge the conservation of forest biodiversity. Yet, in thermally limited systems, such as temperate forests, not all species groups might be affected negatively. Furthermore, simultaneous changes in the disturbance regime have the potential to mitigate climate-related impacts on forest species. Here, we (i) investigated the potential long-term effect of cli...
