چکیده

loading for zSeries G. Banzhaf F. W. Brice G. R. Frazier J. P. Kubala T. B. Mathias V. Sameske This paper describes a new kind of initial program loading (IPL) for IBM zSeries servers. The new IPL protocol expands the set of input/output devices that can be used during IPL to include Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) Fibre Channel protocol (FCP) disk devices (SCSI disks). We begin by describing several new challenges resulting from the use of SCSI disks during IPL, followed by a brief overview of new concepts we have applied to the IPL process to overcome these challenges. We continue with a step-by-step description of the processes executed during SCSI IPL, the tools used, the disk format, the parameters required, and related topics. Since SCSI IPL is supported for virtual machines instantiated by the z/VM operating system, some unique features of this capability are described. Finally, we describe a variation of SCSI IPL that enables the contents of memory to be dumped onto a SCSI disk.

FCP for the IBM eServer zSeries systems: Access to distributed storage

The IBM eServer zSeries FCP (Fibre Channel Protocol for SCSI) channel provides “Linux for zSeries” the capability to access storage devices using SCSI and FCP protocols, thus enabling it to make use of distributed storage. Leveraging the zSeries-unique virtualization approach for industry-standard storage devices as well, the zSeries FCP channel provides unique value in UNIX and Linux environme...

Millicode in an IBM zSeries processor

Because of the complex architecture of the zSeries processors, an internal code, called millicode, is used to implement many of the functions provided by these systems. While the hardware can execute many of the logically less complex and high-performance instructions, millicode is required to implement the more complex instructions, as well as to provide additional support functions related pr...

Guided Navigation in Task-Oriented 3D Graph Visualizations

In many application areas an optimal visualization of a complex graph depends on the specific task to be accomplished by the user. Therefore a means of locally customizable layouts is required to focus on different problem aspects. We propose a concept of user-driven hierarchization and layout optimization in the context of IBM zSeries I/O configurations. We combine the concepts of glyphs, loca...
