چکیده

We have performed detailed numerical calculations of the non-conservative evolution of close binary systems with low-mass (1.0 − 2.0M⊙) donor stars and a 1.3M⊙ accreting neutron star. Rather than using analytical expressions for simple polytropes, we calculated the thermal response of the donor star to mass loss, in order to determine the stability and follow the evolution of the mass transfer. Tidal spin-orbit interactions and Reimers wind mass-loss were also taken into account. We have re-calculated the correlation between orbital period and white dwarf mass in wide binary radio pulsar systems. Furthermore, we find an anti-correlation between orbital period and neutron star mass under the assumption of the ”isotropic re-emission” model and compare this result with observations. We conclude that the accretion efficiency of neutron stars is rather low and that they eject a substantial fraction of the transferred material even when accreting at a sub-Eddington level. The mass-transfer rate is a strongly increasing function of initial orbital period and donor star mass. For relatively close systems with light donors (Porb < 10 days and M2 < 1.3M⊙) the mass-transfer rate is sub-Eddington, whereas it can be highly super-Eddington by a factor of ∼ 10 for wide systems with relatively heavy donor stars (1.6 ∼ 2.0M⊙) as a result of their deep convective envelopes. We briefly discuss the evolution of X-ray binaries with donor stars in excess of 2M⊙. Based on our calculations we present evidence that PSR J1603–7202 evolved through a phase with unstable mass transfer from a relatively heavy donor star and therefore is likely to host a CO white dwarf companion.

Population synthesis of wide binary millisecond pulsars

Four evolutionary channels leading to the formation of wide binary millisecond pulsars are investigated. The majority of binary millisecond pulsars are found to descend from systems in which the most massive component undergoes a common-envelope phase prior to the supernova explosion leading to the birth of the neutron star. The orbital period distribution of simulated samples of wide binary mi...

The discovery of millisecond pulsations from neutron stars in low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) systems has substantiated the theoretical prediction that links millisecond radio pulsars (MSRPs) and LMXBs. Since then, the process that produces millisecond radio pulsars from LMXBs, followed by spin-down due to dipole radiation has been conceived as the ’standard evolution’ of millisecond pulsars. Howe...

Implications of the PSR 1257+12 Planetary System for Isolated Millisecond Pulsars

The first extrasolar planets were discovered in 1992 around the millisecond pulsar PSR 1257+12. We show that recent developments in the study of accretion onto magnetized stars, plus the existence of the innermost, moon-sized planet in the PSR 1257+12 system, suggest that the pulsar was born with approximately its current rotation frequency and magnetic moment. If so, this has important implica...

Formation of Millisecond Pulsars from Accretion Induced Collapse and Constraints on Pulsar Gamma Ray Burst Models

We study accretion induced collapse of magnetized white dwarfs as an origin of millisecond pulsars. We apply magnetized accretion disk models to the pre-collapse accreting magnetic white dwarfs and calculate the white dwarf spin evolution. If the pulsar magnetic field results solely from the flux-frozen fossil white dwarf field, a typical millisecond pulsar is born with a field strength ∼ 10 − ...

Formation of Sub-millisecond Pulsars and Possibility of Detection

Pulsars have been recognized as normal neutron stars, but sometimes argued as quark stars. Sub-millisecond pulsars, if detected, would play an essential and important role in distinguishing quark stars from neutron stars. We focus on the formation of such sub-millisecond pulsars in this paper. A new approach to form a sub-millisecond pulsar (quark star) via accretion induced collapse (AIC) of a...
