I’ERJUNG, R. L., K. M. BALIX~~N, W. W. WINDER, AND J. Q. HOLLOSZY. GLycogen repletion in cli$erent types of muscle and in Iiver ufter exhausting exercise. Am. J. Physiol. 226(6): 1387-1391. 1974.Glycogen repletion rates in fast-twitch red, slow-twitch red, and fast-twitch white types of skeletal muscle, in heart, and in liver were compared in rats after depletion of glycogen stores by exercise. ‘rhe highest rates of glycogen synthesis in all five tissues were seen between 30 and 60 min after exercise. The fastest glycogen synthesis rate in the three types of skeletal muscle was seen in fast-red muscle which had a peak synthesis rate 3 times as great as white and twice as great as slow-red muscle. Heart muscle had a glycogen synthesis rate 125y0 that of fast-red muscle. Liver had a synthesis rate 17570 that of fast-red muscle. Glycogen concentrations are much higher in liver than in muscle in fed, rested rats; therefore, although liver had the fastest glycogen synthesis rate, glycogen attained control levels later in liver than in the muscles.

Sucrose ingestion after exhaustive exercise accelerates liver, but not muscle glycogen repletion when compared to glucose ingestion in trained athletes

Purpose: To assess the effects of sucrose versus glucose ingestion on post-exercise liver and muscle glycogen repletion. Methods: Fifteen well-trained male cyclists completed 2 test days. Each test day started with glycogen-depleting exercise, followed by 5 h of recovery, during which subjects ingested 1.5 g·kg−1·h−1 sucrose or glucose. Blood was sampled frequently and C magnetic resonance spec...

A Review of the Role of Carbohydrates in the Sports Nutrition of Soccer Players

Background & Aims: Soccer is a very dynamic and fast team game with a richness of movement, which is in the group of multi-structured sports games; Soccer is a sport characterized by numerous, complex, and dynamic kinematics activities with rotational or non-rotational movements (1). In this sport, a high level of points can be achieved only in planned training conditions (2). Sports scientists...

Liver glycogen metabolism during and after prolonged endurance-type exercise.

Carbohydrate and fat are the main substrates utilized during prolonged endurance-type exercise. The relative contribution of each is determined primarily by the intensity and duration of exercise, along with individual training and nutritional status. During moderate- to high-intensity exercise, carbohydrate represents the main substrate source. Because endogenous carbohydrate stores (primarily...

Glucose Plus Fructose Ingestion for Post-Exercise Recovery—Greater than the Sum of Its Parts?

Carbohydrate availability in the form of muscle and liver glycogen is an important determinant of performance during prolonged bouts of moderate- to high-intensity exercise. Therefore, when effective endurance performance is an objective on multiple occasions within a 24-h period, the restoration of endogenous glycogen stores is the principal factor determining recovery. This review considers t...
