Facile electrosynthesis of π-extended porphyrins.

The facile electrosynthesis of π-extended porphyrins is demonstrated for a series of Zn(II), In(III), Ir(III) and free-base meso-substituted derivatives containing the 4,7-dimethoxynaphthalen-1-yl substituent. Electrochemical data suggest that the overall process initially involves two stepwise one-electron oxidations, followed by an intramolecular oxidative aromatic coupling to give the electrooxidized π-extended porphyrin.

The repeated 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition followed by oxidation-reduction of pentaphyrin analogs afforded π-extended porphyrin analogs.

These conformational effects are reflected in the spectroscopic features, including the excited singlet state lifetimes.

Zinc porphyrin dimers and trimers, in which the porphyrins are connected via a ruthenium metal core, exhibit large third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive indices. These properties are a result of the presence of multiple porphyrins, which lead to an extension of the π-conjugated system and the octupolar effect.
